It’s not going away because you complain about it on an anonymous layoff forum. It’s just not going away.
It makes zero sense for so many of us, has negative environmental impacts, causes us to have more personal expenses, exposes us to disease, forces us to work in awful cube farms with no privacy and exposes us to the variety of personalities that we sometimes don’t like, forces us to smell that nasty fish your coworker insists on heating up in the microwave…yes, for most of us, the office blows.
And yet…it is here to stay. I recommend finding a way to make it work for you and make the best of it. Here’s what I do: get there early so I can snag an office (this eliminates the majority of the things I despise about being in office), eat my lunch I brought from home, leave in the early afternoon to avoid rush hour traffic and take my late meetings at home so when it’s 5, I’m automatically home and can engage with my family. When I do this, it’s really not all that bad. I can put my head down and focus and have some decent free coffee to boot. It’s fine.
Do what you need to do for you, but for the sake of your own stress levels and sanity, just accept that RTO is here.
