I’m running WAVE via BYOB on a 12 year old laptop with Windows 10. Works surprisingly well with 4 extery monitors via dock and USB VGA adapter. Didn’t buy anything new, just stuff I had lying around. Honestly a better deal than lugging equipment to and from the office.

The desktop team doesn't know what they are doing. They are overprovisioning the VDIs trying to cram as many users onto it as they can and worry about fixing the issues later.
I'm not a huge tech person but the VDI is hot garbage. It literally feels like every character typed, click, or application to trying to load has to bounce back and forth between some triangulation of cloud centers between India, Phillipines, and wherever else the next sweat shop is going up.
Log into work with a laptop full of p0rn? No problem!
Also SVB: To save even more money, we'll be using zero-cost EOL Windows XP on your upcoming VDIs (sip coffee), oh yeah, it also comes with the proven classic, Internet Explorer 8.0.
Speaking of VDI, I think I might have caught VD from an older married woman that I was previously sleeping with.
She was down for just about anything though.
Overall I'd say the experience was worth it.

You don't hand over anything but a vanilla Windows VDI in the scenario I presented. It's roughly $120 per year to run a man in the middle MS proxy desktop on the cloud.
Do you find it worth $120 per year to protect your private hardware?

I think unlike byob on your phone where they install a container and actual software, that isn't the case with the new vdi setups. you go to a url, put in your credentials, and that's it. zero footprint beying having a modern browser. I could be wrongnand even if I am and a court order demands my Chromebook they can have it given I would not be using it for anything personal. im also curious as to how many people have had to turn their personal devices over due to a court order. my guess is it's pretty slim.
Can't wait when there is a problem and WF wants your chromebook or phone for whatever reason. In that case, if I am using it, it will go into the river and they can go get it,
I can't wait to get the new vdi. they'll put thon clients in all the offices and if your job requires it they'll likely give you the equivalent of a Chromebook on request as all you need is a browser. they could also go so far as to make you use your own machine if you want to work from home. id much rather use my own machine than the garbage hardware we get now, and for those worried just pick up an old Chromebook for next to nothing if not nothing and use that.

I love my POS laptop. I like being able to take it and work wherever I need to. I will also admit that the physical presence of it provides a level of formality to my employment with a physical connection to the company.
That said, I like the idea of using VDI. I would only need to take one laptop when traveling. Instead of having to log in from somewhere in the domestic US, I could log in from anywhere in the world (I'm fully remote). I could even use my own cloud VDI (roughly the same cost as the POS hardware WF buys for laptops over the 3 years of warranty) as a gateway to make sure that it looks like I'm logging in from the USA.
However, I would only welcome it if it works as billed, not how it has underperformed on every work app I use, after moving to the cloud.
The move to VDI is no net gain if the only thing you're looking at is hardware. Anyone who has passed AZ900 or even looked at the materials for they tell you one of the main benefits is getting rid of your OS maintenance teams. That cost is baked into the subscription, which roughly translates to the cost of a low-end, 3-4 year hardware warrantied laptop. This is if it's used almost exactly 8 hours a day over 3-4 years. The cost goes up or down based on usage.
The desktop becomes an online service. Wells controls the user experience, all machine maintenance tasks are supposedly performed by Microsoft.
There's also the "added benefit" that if a software install or hardware issue breaks your machine, there's no reimage or hardware swap. You simply log into a new VM.
Awesome if it actually works as intended. The sales pitch is something else.
I think Saul is a very good head of IT. He can actually speak to the technical aspects as well as general strategy. The thing that is ki-ling morale is the drip drip drip of layoffs. Getting displaced is a life altering action. The execs must know that so I don’t know why they stick to that strategy.
I'm not a fan of Saul.... I really don't like our executives boasting about what they have and how they live

Those talking about not having a computer. Right… If that is even the case, you are what’s called an edge case. Such a small percentage that it is not worth consideration in an enterprise strategy.

I don't have a personal computer because they're not needed in this day and age. Do I just use my cellphone to do my job? Will we be provided a computer if we only have a phone?

I will start. What does it cost companies to buy or lease 1 laptop. Definitely less than this stupid VDI that they are doing. I am not using my personal laptop for work. There’s a reason it’s personal.
