Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

ATT is not the only show in town

It's a part of life these days to have to look for a job several times or more throughout a professional career. It's extremely rare for anyone to stay with the same employer their whole career anymore. Younger employees jump companies frequently in a years time or less.

Update your resume, post it online, network and practice your interview skills. On average the process takes five (5) months from the time you separate from your old employer to when you land a new job. Be open minded to new opportunities and maintain a positive outlook. Stay connected to the outside world socially.

Be diligent in your search and put the time in to research out new opportunities. Take online classes and watch videos to learn as much as you can to prepare yourself for your next position.

Remember, AT&T is not the only place to work, there are many good companies out there you just have to be patient for the right opportunity to present itself.

Some people need to be told again and again.

att management are children. been to two places since I left and management has been adults. haven't heard the word layoff or surplus and have been challenged and working on cutting edge cloud stuff.
anybody thinking of working at att please don't - I am saying this for your own career and health not revenge against att. you will be so much happier at some other place than att it isn't even funny. it is not normal to have layoffs and surplus as every day, month, quarterly, or yearly. Only other place I have seen layoffs like att are places like boeing and lockhead martin but all their work is contractual and is expected and even then it isn't as bad as att because they don't over hire people. in the IT world att is not normal and their management is a joke and children.

And you omitted the most important part with your "cut & paste"..

"Lastly, remember to pray for God's leading in your life. Best with your search."

Nice way to lift my post!

You might consider taking a writing class for your next job since employers don't approve of plagiarism...

plenty of clec isp's and cable companies expanding fiber into att's territory. plenty of job opportunities. probably 5 years of ba--s to the wall buildout work.

Hate to break it to you bud, T is certainly no angel when it comes to job security , but if you think going to a FANNG in this economic environment is any better your about three years out of date, the tech landscape has totally changed!

I would say right now T is more stable in terms of job security than Amazon ,(just laid off 9k ) ,Facebook, Google, Microsoft and hoards of smaller tech companies.

What a lot of Gen Z and millennials are learning is the lesson of corporate job loyalty and security and how there isnt any... It's basically a slap in their face and hopefully a wake up call for them to put themselves first.

That’s great advice for 50 and under but for older employees it’s a lot more complicated, not impossible but definitely involved. By design, most employees hired in the late 90’s and early 2000 were older than the previous generations that were hired right out of high school. It’s affected retirement plans and having to work longer. Age discrimination is real too when one is trying to make a change or a lot of people would have already moved on.

The company started reducing benefits, the 2 biggest being the pension and healthcare after SBC took over. Company used to match yearly wage raises in the pension, now it’s only 1% @ yr. If you are lucky to still have one. We didn’t use to have an insurance premium, large out of pocket, large deductible expenses until 2008 when the “Cadillac plans” became a target after ACA... aka Obamacare passed. Company contributions to the 401k averages about 2k a year if a union employee max’s out the match. Everything else is up to the individual
