Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Not sure what to do

Is anyone else feeling like they're not being given enough work to do, only to be told to train new employees to perform the same tasks? It's making me incredibly anxious and worried. Could it be that I'm being replaced by these new trainees? The thought of it is keeping me up at night. I'm not sure what to do, and I feel like I'm stuck in a difficult position.

Unless your job title says "trainer" or "instructor" or "manager" or something like that you are being asked to perform work that is not in your job description.

SOOOOOOOO.........

Unless you have been trained formally on training people, you can spend a whole lot of time training them and making sure they are even more confused when you get through with them.....

After all, don't most of these newbies think they were already overqualified and knew it all before they even got the job?

Just help them retain their beliefs and make sure your work is more valuable each day than theirs.

For those that say "don't train folks" I disagree. However, I would agree with "Don't train contractors!

Yes, I would absolutely feel that way. Respectfully, update your resume, look for new jobs, and slow roll the training until you have a new job lined up. They’re about to lay you off.

Try talking to your manager and leadership chain rather than posting on an a online forum where we don’t know your department or tower or manhole lid.

“No one is safe. This includes you! Some employees are under the assumption they are sacred cattle. Some actually believe they will get 30 years or more in, dream on! “

Well I have 25 years in and I’ll likely be here 25 more, as long as I can climb a ladder. We’re busy most days and the company is always going to need boots on the ground. The advantage of unions is seniority and years of service mean something. I’m not one of those who sits on my bu-t just because I’m senior though. I earn my paycheck by old fashioned sweat and a good work ethic.

Not sure where you're getting that from, but my business unit of bargained for technicians are very safe for now. I don't see layoffs for at least the next 3-5 years because we have plenty of work to keep us busy. If T does plan on outsourcing the work some time down the road, it definitely would not happen this year cuz we're still hiring!

I would start looking if I were you. I have so much work I can't keep up.

Training new people is training your replacements.

Never show someone enough that they can replace you. Only teach them the bare minimum.

That’s why they want you in office, to train new hires because some of these sr managers don’t know sh-t about telecom services. They need bodies to order around and then you are too expensive to keep around.

Have you asked for more work or an opportunity to cross train?

because you have to learn to do you, have a plan b, use att as a stepping stone to move to other companies, use their tution reimbursement, and just teach the basics to the new hires, your experience is yours
