Cheap labor? Maybe, but it can't be that much cheaper, and that cheapness is accompanied by subpar talent and performance.

Des moines will be around long after chuckle gers ousted. The stock is 22 bucks lower than 4 years ago when he started. Once chuck gets the boot all of NYC is gone. It's not our headquarters. You clowns are on borrowed time. Chuck usually only keeps a job 4 - 5 years before he is forced out

At one time Des Moines was the HQ for card services, financial and home mortgage.
Some of those businesses were started there (Dial Finance) while others evolved over time. The head of mortgage and the Iowa community bank regional president were best buds with Di-k Kovacevich (who was born in Iowa and still has a fair number of family members there) so the fix was in to grow those businesses in Des Moines.
Fast forward 30 years and card moved to Sioux Falls, financial was eliminated and mortgage is a shell of its former self.
Who knows what will happen but the people who had a stake in growing the Des Moines footprint are long gone.
NYC wants to shutter ALL the sites in the US eventually, except the ivory tower of course. It's obvious. We are all to be replaced by AI, contractors, overseas employees, automation, etc. The NYC crowd despises us all.
Both the east and west coasts have greater talent pools to recruit from than tiny, homogenous Des Moines.
I can see the east coast wanting Des Moines gone. I'm sure the east folks hate seeing how intellectual inferior they are and getting rid of all the white folks will help goose the DEI percentages.

Charlie would love to shutter Des Moines and St Louis I’m sure. He-l the execs of those divisions (Kristy Fercho in mortgage and WFA president) don’t even work in their respective headquarters. They’re on the east coast, just like Charlie doesn’t work in San Fran!
They won't get rid of Des Moines or the other midwestern locations because its cheaper to hire someone there then it is on the east coast.
WF is a boring bank and being in corn country makes sense. Their NYC presence feels so off, maybe they'll have a branding change one day. Like KFC and Kentucky Fried Chicken, reduce it to simply WFB and modernize the logo/colors.

It really is time for Des Moines to go.
Maybe years ago when work was more manual it made sense to farm the work out to a small, simple community. People shuffling packets of paperwork into bins, etc.
But modern times calls for modern solutions. Des Moines fails at anything requiring planning, thought, experience.
Des Moines has a very small, homogenous population. And each generation is just like the last.
Larger metro areas have much larger and greater talent pools to recruit from.
It's time to shutter Des Moines.

Wells Fargo is a bunch of id--tic sl--e and We in Des Moines have been here since before Norwest bought Wells. The reason the pool is small for recruiting is that you have treated the des moines people horrible and laid off the workers that cared. The heart and soul of this company sits in data centers and is managed by highly educated professionals from all over the world. Most of them are willing to take your job for a lot less than the garbage in flyover country.

Otherwise we wouldn't be in the constant consent order business. The heart and soul of this company sits in Fly Over country - for you east coasters, that's Iowa, Minnesota, and somewhat Missouri.
