I’ve had them tell me that I should consider it a compliment to have other people’s work dumped on me at the last minute. Because it shows my manager trusts me.

No, it shows my manager is an incompetent lazy a$$ who is incapable of developing people.

If high performers are so ‘burdened with extra work’ then how will they mentor us little ol’ meets’ to learn and get promoted? Isn’t that why we were dragged back into the office?

It isn't just high performers. It can happen to average performers. We have a team member that makes every excuse why he can't finish his work to meet deadlines, so we end up having to take on his work too.
