Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

What's the point in having a "final" day if you are let go?

I'm safe according to my manager, as is most of my department but I've always wondered... What's the point in letting someone go on a Monday (or at least telling them it's going to happen) and then saying your last day is the 10th? If I were cut I would have zero incentive to do any work and, does it not make it risky to allow a laid off employee to still have access to a lot of things that they could destroy or make a disaster out of?

Like, I personally couldn't do any of my job if my adm account was disabled lol. and if i was a disgruntled ex employee who still had access to certain devices, it'd take 10 minutes to go in and wreck absolute havoc.

They do it so they aren't bombarded with phones calls and emails from former employees needing access to payroll, insurance and other information. It's to benefit Dell not the employee.

If you get cut be a professional.
I think I may be in the firing line and I plan on leaving with dignity.
Why burn bridges?
You may meet some people down the line so think long term.

That is the one decent thing about how Dell handles their layoffs, allowing you time to wrap up and say your goodbyes. Trust me, the company I'm at laid of 40% of our sales team and they were cut-off during their "lay off" call. They were treated like enemies even though they did nothing wrong. Most people are professionals and wouldn't think to use any remaining time to "wreak havoc".

I would bet money that the Chainsaw HR company that is dealing with this could only service N many layoffs per day so they set the date as 2/10 and gave them 5 days to service 6650 layoffs. Again saving Dell money on fewer HR people contracted. Also they Chainsawed HR like 6 months ago, and out sourced the function. The Bain people who are overseeing this are just a bunch of fu----g ba----ds. Dell will not be able to hire Sr level people for years after this, no matter how much they offer.

Ok but, imagine you are 60and was with the company 30 years. Always did a good job, never caused problems, and an overall great employee and then get the axe. At 60, I think a lot of people would not bother with another job and have nothing to lose by going out with a "bang" as their reputation no longer matters, their future job prospects dont matter, etc... Nothing to lose.

I would personally never do anything like that if I were laid off because i'd lose them as a reference and i think its a cr---y thing to do, however, when you have access to the firewalls, VPN's, routers, you literally can shut Dell down.
Just makes more sense to let someone go and immediately disable all their accounts and show them the door imo

You need to get all your prescriptions filled before midnight the last. Even with Cobra, insurance can get messy. Plus you want to use up any funds on your HSA and $300 fitness allowance. Redeem your Inspire points. Save links to ADP and other benefits sites that you have been accessing through single logon.

Years ago, I was let go with a final day (two weeks later). They give you this time to wrap up loose ends and they know you will not be doing any serious work despite getting paid. They encourage you to take the time to network internally in the small off-chance possibility you can get another position in the company. They went over severance and provided third party job placement assistance. By treating you this way, they are counting on you not being disgruntled and doing damage to systems. I didn't do any more work but I had access all the way until the final day when I came in to return my badge and equipment. Of course, this may not happen in every scenario. It probably depends on what your job/role was to determine if you stay for a bit or are shown the door immediately.

I would want to the time to wrap up any small tasks I was in the middle of, move my professional accounts out of my Dell email, say my goodbyes while I still had access to Teams, and take care of any HR stuff that is easier when you still have access to the network. I'm in my 3rd decade with the company and I have no intention to burn a bridge by "wrecking havoc" and I would be more upset if I was cutoff immediately. Anyone given a few days are not going to be expected to much real work.
