Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Honest question. Would like an honest answer.

People persistently repeat that no one is safe, but I guess it is in human nature to believe that they will survive layoffs despite everything. How safe do you feel your job is?

New management offer. Will you collect the China balloon covid bats and give them mRNA vaccine? Not to worry, the Beijing Biden bats stop biting after receiving their booster.

Second the last poster.

During a down hall, SVP announced how exciting it was to have the new batch of college hires coming in this spring and summer and announced org layoff shortly after. Standard operating procedures, all in plain sight and no one dared to ask the obvious.

been with att 18 years I see the below happen all the time. they hire new people and then take the job away from the old people and give it to the people they just hired and then let the old people go. People doing the same exact job. the below is just not true. att does it to get rid of the benefits of the employees that have been a while. that is a fact.

"If AT&T is hiring in my business unit, why would I worry about being laid off? Never in my career have I ever seen T hire new people and then layoff older employees within the same business unit. They never have functioned that way! If they need workers, they keep who they have, period!"

Stankey isn't wrong, he's just complying with the requests of his lower level management teams that dictate their needs of the business and he abides by it! If they tell him they're short-handed and need bodies to perform various job functions and can't do without, then he complies. It all depends on what the management teams are telling the higher up VPs. My business unit is remaining fully intact and will not be forced to give up bodies to down sizing. We have approximately 33 people on our staff. It's really very simple!

I don't feel "safe" by any stretch, but having been here 25+ years now (Mobility- non bargained) these events no longer cause me the angst and stress that they did when they became a somewhat regular thing starting 7 or so years ago. I want to stay for a few more years (hopefully) and I will not "volunteer" to leave to get the same severance that I would get in the event that I am invountarily retired now.

In terms of how I feel about my personal chances of staying, over others on my team...I am fairly sure I am one of the top performers on my team. There are a couple remaining on my team that are the "MIA" type, always out, never on calls, so when they are in, they never know what's going on. I feel reasonably sure my Boss will jump at the chance to let these 2 go if he has to offer up a couple.

All of that said, though my group has a lot of work, it's been stated that entire groups could be axed. I wouldn't be shocked if that were to happen, though I wouldn't bet on it.

“ Everybody I work with doesn't even think about being laid off because our business unit is very safe and secure and still hiring. ”
What planet are you on ? This poster will be the same that weeps when the surplus e-mail comes with no warning. No one is safe, no business unit is safe, no single function in the company is safe..wake up and plan for your next career stop.

Everybody I work with doesn't even think about being laid off because our business unit is very safe and secure and still hiring. There's not enough work to keep us all busy for 8 hours per day, but who am I to question the motives behind hiring practices. All I do know is that my peers are completely oblivious to any kind of layoff activity throughout ATT. It's not a concern and never has been!

Job security at T is non-existant. I am so stressed out that I cannot sleep at night. T is a very sick company and I don't see it getting any better ever. T is dying a slow death.

BFS-SSIM is golden. Less work. More people. No surplus. Life is good.

No one I know feels safe. Most get physically sick when they think about it, which is all the time. It's really difficult to accept that a company like at&t can go from being financially healthy to a company that has to continually layoff to keep the lights on. It's no wonder everyone hates Stankey, look what he has done, just look what he has done.

Take all the surplus posts, pro or con and this statement below is distilled to the simple common denominator.

“Safety is what you cultivate for yourself, relying on an employer's business decisions is not a wise move.”

Perfectly stated…don’t wait plan for the inevitable at T.

I am part of the impacted group, to be selected for layoff with last day on March 3rd. Management keep insisting that they don't know anything, someone has to select who is safe and who isn't, it is all bs. I'm ready, have a job offer in hand ready, select me and pay my severance and I'll be on my merry way. I'm feeling pretty damn safe, never count on Stankey and his cronies. You don't need to be here long to know that. Good luck.

Feel way safer and get treated way better in management than in craft without seniority.

The only people truly safe from layoffs at T are SVP or higher.

However, if you are below L4, then you are absolutely not safe. It simply becomes a matter of fortune and being part of the next group that will be scapagoated to cover for the next blunder by Stink. If you are L1 - L3 and think you're safe you are simply deluding yourself.

I feel safe being craft with 25 years. Company will always need boots on the ground. I’m so glad I chose not to go into AT&T management. Watching how the company treats its management employees has been a real eye opener, and not in a good way. Once you are 50 years old , they target you for surplus if your management , to avoid paying the benefits you’ve earned. How messed up is that. Say what you will about unions but at least they help with job security. I intend to work here till I’m a 100, just to spite them lol

Based on my job title/function, number of people on my team, my abilities vs theirs etc. I feel pretty safe this round. I’m not convinced we won’t lose 1 or 2 of our folks though.

I’m safe, but only because I have enough seniority now and enough people under me. If I was management I would probably never feel safe. Funny thing is that now it’s not even worth moving up in the company because of it.

T has paid for me to finish my Bachelors and Masters degrees along with a Project Management and other technical certifications, all so that the only place I can use these skills is with another company. Overall I can’t complain about the pay and benefits, but I’m sure it’s very stressful to be constantly worried about layoffs.

Years ago I worked for a large company that laid off every 6 months like clockwork. Eventually it was my turn.

With that being said, if you don't feel safe, you should have a strategy in place on what to do if it happens. Will help you sleep better at night. Perhaps ways to cut expenses, where to apply immediately if it happens, squirrel away a little savings maybe.

In my example...I started applying for other jobs because I didn't feel comfortable. I applied before I was laid off. Sure enough, 5 days after I was laid off I had a better job in my hands.

Sometimes life has a way of working out
