When I asked my former dou--ebag supervisor what I needed to improve for the following year, he didn’t even bother to hide the corruption. He said, ‘I’m not giving you anything because I don’t want you to offset the person sitting in a higher ranking than you.’ That wasn’t feedback — it was an admission that the entire system was rigged, that merit was irrelevant, and that his job was to protect the chosen favorite. He wasn’t a leader; he was a petty gatekeeper guarding a crooked hierarchy built on a-s‑kissing, gossip, and manufactured narratives.

You need to change roles to compete but you are ranked so low you cannot be placed in a competitive role.
Great role comes up in your discipline but given to the VP’s planner that is not qualified for the role and a Contractor hired to do the real work while the incompetent Planner does PowerPoint and gets credit for successful job.
