Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Why do most posters want Oracle to fail?

I fail to understand that.

  1. If you were previously employed with Oracle, but you quit or were let go with a severance, those were the terms you agreed to when you signed up. The severance is actually a bonus because Oracle could have gotten rid of you just by paying the notice period.

  2. If you are currently employed with Oracle, this situation d-mbfounds me even more. Why would you want the ship you are sailing in to sink? If you are not comfortable for any reason, just jump ship. It's not Oracle's problem that the job market is bad out there.

  3. If neither of the above is applicable, why on earth would you wish ill on an entity you are not even connected to?

I really wish to understand. Enlighten me, please. ELI4.

The only way the stock can raise is, Larry and Clay giving personal loan of everything they have to Open AI and let them pay to Oracle. Anyway so far the stock raise is this money rotation with out any real value.

@d9 history doesn't have to go back to the beginning of civilization to be relevant. I do have a firm grip on reality and fully understand the reality of what is happening to people. This isn't impacting me, I am financially independent. I have seen this coming for years and prepared. Unlike you I am not telling people to su-k it up. As little as five years ago it was a reasonable expectation to do a good job and be able to have a career with the same employer. Employers have changed this expectation and five years isn't enough time for most people to adjust. They probably didn't even notice that it happened until they were laid off. The lack of empathy on your part is worth looking into. You may view this as I am just looking at the situation logically but their is clearly some sociopathic interpretations on you part.

@cq historical norm lol. Civilisations have been around for millenia. Large tech corporations 30-50 years?

Get a grip on reality!

But thanks for answering my original question. I think I get it now.

I am not autistic or have a personality disorder. I am just prudent or maybe I got lucky. Hard to tell which is true. I still try to be grateful for what I have. Maybe practice that and it will help you feel better about the situation regardless of what happens to Oracle.

@bw that is ignorant and immature. The difference between a decades long career and hiring a contractor to do a single job at your house is not the same thing. You are the one confused about the basic facts. Life is devolving in the direction you profess but it doesn't make it morally or ethically correct. This isn't the historical norm and the rules were changed without input from all parties impacted. I am glad you are comfortable with just being a number you will fit right in with the new world order. Unfortunately for you it is destined to fail. Your lack of empathy is a symptom of personality disorders or maybe you are autistic. You should be some help.

@OP
Having been let go and found another, higher paying job, I don't really care either way.
In my 30+ year career in IT, every single company I've worked for has disappeared: either acquired, gone bust, etc.

If Oracle did the same it would keep my record consistent.

@OP Current employee ...have significant amount in RSU. Call me a sadist, but I see the Oracle's failure(s) as justice served cold. They way they treat employees is beyond pathetic. O feels that they have done a favor to you by employing you. Often you hear from undeserving and rude management "feel lucky that you still have a job" . I mean I get it considering the brutal IT market for last 2 years , but do we need this harshness ! To add salt to the wounds , dry promotions , substandard compensation and no justification. There is no transparency in communication. It is like living in a dictatorial regime.
Why i am still here ? I am trying, may be not hard enough . Also the O brand, tech and my tenure in O are not making a great impression on the prospective employers.

@ba If you were talking about friendships, a marital relationship, family etc, whatever you said makes perfecr sense. Whose fault is it if you bring your emotions with you past the office door? Working full time at a company is no different than contracting a civil crew, plumber or electrician for a job at your residence. Just because you do it daily and for long term, you don't develop a special relationship. That sounds so convoluted. I sympathise you for not understanding this basic fact. I wish you well nevertheless.

OP, do you interface with humans much? Human brains aren't binary, we don't just turn things on and off. When you are treated unfairly or you even see friends treated unfairly it impacts you negatively. Tech corporations, not just Oracle, have changed their policies toward workers since the pandemic. Attitudes about employees have shifted from being valuable resources that need to be rewarded to now being expendable and even single use. Experience equals high cost. People are being fired at vulnerable points in their lives. The top 0.5% of the employees are reaping all of the rewards and everyone else is supposed to be happy they still have jobs for now. This disparity creates contempt which manifests into people wanting to see the company fail even if they still work there or don't work there at all.

Use this input to update your next model.

I worked here for 20 + years in various teams. Salary was always bad. But work satisfaction was good. I loved working on projects which were in news and brought revenue.

My last line manager was almost out for 2 yrs on sick leave, medical leave and whatever kind of leave is out there.

He was straight on sick leave for almost 4 months, came back for a week and then went on planned leave. Who the F does that.

I only got campus hires who always leave in a year. After all left I was the one doing my managers work and my directs work like an IC. Guess who they let go and who they saved.

So yes. Its a sinking ship and it should sink.

OP here. I am not HR. I am just a regular employee, not even a manager. However, I am grounded by reality and do not feel entitled or have expectations from my employer beyond what is contracted. If I worked overtime, it was not because my manager told me to, but because I really wanted to help the customer. It was because of how I felt about the situation and not with an expectation of my employer to take notice of my extra contributions and reward me.

  1. Oracle never paid good salary and its severance is too bad in the industry. Lot of my friends who were let go are crying in pain for less severance and health benefits.
    1. I am a big contributor to a project and its my child. But my management is getting credits and paying peanuts. Loyalty is broken. I am ok to leave but the co-signed management who just showed their heads during patent filing and cost center allocation they still survive.
    2. Job market is bad out, but how many of us are prepared. I spent some years contributing to Oracle project rather than working on leetcode and interview preparation. We still survive with POJO (Plain Old Java Only) . Some people who presented very good projects and challenged the management for better ideas are now in streets waiting for their next job.
In short, Oracle is filled with Beuracracy which has to be heavily downsized. Yes I am working on jumping the ship.
@OP, If you are HR, can you voice for employees rather than supporting management ?
      JOKERS

You’re d-mbfounded? Imagine working 25 or 30 years for a company then getting let go via 5 am email in the morning. No meeting no call NOTHING! It happened exactly like that to people we all knew. The severance wasn’t even 1 week a year O cheaped out at 26 wks TOPS and 1 mo cobra, no other support, and they followed it up by hiring A SINGLE PERSON for 25 million. Fk Oracle LE CM MS can all choke on their debt. If you can’t figure out why people are mad you’re an absolute brick.
