I am puzzled.

Most store employees are hourly, many part time, underpaid, and CVS is just another retail job and not a career for them. Their experience with the company is mostly limited to the four walls of the individual store they work in. If hours get cut or the store closes, they pick up hours at other stores or find another job at some other retailer. Corporate layoffs are of little consequence to them.
Because turnover is too high for layoffs in stores. And the closed stores employees get transferred to another store instead of being laid off.
Here's a pet peeve. Why isn't company policy being enforced? Company policy explicitly says that 2 people must be in the store at all times. Why is this policy not being enforced? And why are DL's conveniently looking the other way on this? Strictly following this policy would help a lot, because then corporate would see how bad things really are when they see the amount of stores that would open late and close early every day.
Think about it: When you were earning just above minimum wage, did you worry this much about being laid off? Probably not. The stress is greater now because you have significant financial obligations—and possibly a family depending on you.
