The people who rise through the ranks aren't the ones who know what they're doing. They're the ones who barely understand their own jobs. It would be funny to watch if it wasn't so infuriating. Competence isn't valued, ignorance and good a-s-kissing skills are.

Smart people, even if they do know you, never hire you if you have a shady past or are known for fraudulent self-promotion. It's too risky for them.
The repeating theme of many advancing up the chain is the mastery of @$$-k1ss1ng skills; the same personality types who strive to win high-school homecoming king/queen or other baloney popularity contests.
The truly nauseating part however is; since it is employment and indeed not high-school, one is forced to interact and communicate with these narcissistic bozos.
Once you are away from this game of self-promoting bu!!$h1t fame, you truly realize both how dysfunctional and a waste if one's time it is to be in a circumstance to have to "work" with these work-political clowns.
It's not what you know, it's who you know.
@OP It is best to know absolutely nothing, and instead spend all your time trying to figure out what the boss is thinking, figuring out how to claim credit for work done by others, and figuring out how to avoid taking any responsibility.
I dare say that if laid off 80% of the ODs and VPs currently at Cisco, the business wouldn't be affected at all — they are nothing but a cancer.
@a2 Indeed, listening to those so-called "Principal Architects" speak, one finds that the actual content is quite hollow (aside from spouting technical jargon). If the audience isn't familiar with some of those terms, the experience can be exhausting; newcomers, in particular, might initially wonder if the problem lies in their own lack of knowledge. Yet, the way to see through this is simple: strip away the jargon, and you realize their remarks consist merely of "correct platitudes" -- statements that are technically true but devoid of any useful information.
No it's the stupid ones but also ones that use the MOST jargon or wtf buzzwords. They don't even make sense. Just spewing nonsensical verbage that most people never ever use. I always think they lie a lot because it's so phony, they sound like con artists or just fake. I would never promote that
