I expect to get PIP’d in a couple of weeks. Are there any disadvantages of taking PIL and retiring vs simply retiring?
Does taking PIL affect retirement status or any retirement benefits?

I have heard of people planning to leave mid year telling their Supervisor to throw them under the bus to get the 3 month extra pay, and potentially be the Hunger Games tribute for their team such that nobody else gets NSI.
Very unofficial and not part of the system.
I went thru this exact decision a year ago. My concern was whether taking PIL would jeopardize the retention of non-vested RSUs in retirement. You’ll never get confirmation from the executive compensation committee on this matter. A decision won’t be made on your RSUs until after you have retired (and thus after your PIL period is over). But i was advised that over the phone that you generally only lose your RSUs if you do not leave in good standing. Taking a PIL does not impact your good standing. So I took the PIL and was happy to get confirmation months later that I still retained my RSUs in retirement. Hope that helps. Also, the 3 month PIL gives you 3 more months accrual on your pension service and allows you to accrue more vacation time.
@ak Team? There are no "teams" at ExxonMobil. It's everyone for themselves.
Once again, the reason we see so many July 1 retirements and resignations is that executive career decisions are made in December. They either grant execs their bonuses or tell them they are done and must be off the payroll by July 1 of the following year. Highly paid execs don’t have as much latitude to hang on to a moribund career as non-execs do.
@ak It doesn't work like that no one volunteers for NSI.They want to come back as consultants/contractors Take one for team?!!! Are you even familiar for EM culture or lack thereof?
Amazing how many Retirement announcements in the past couple of months. Those retirees could have waited a few weeks, received 3 months free salary, and taken one for the team by being a NSI Vokunteer in the EM Hunger Games.
Essentially free 3 months salary at the end of which you will retire just as you normally would.
No.
