I know a few people who'd take it happily, and it could save a few of us who really want to stay.

The sign of a toxic culture for certain. People begging others to volunteer for a layoff, so they can be saved. Saved for what? Valuable work and contribution that is appropriately rewarded, is what you should be looking for. And there are many good companies offering great positions that will inspire you.
The company tried that hmm about 20 or 25 years ago and got burnt.
Too many people volunteer to be laid off. The company had to redo their layoff
plan.
Totally agree. I know many that would volunteer and who have asked. Don't know how they come up with the list but why not keep people who want to be there and let someone else who hates the place happily leave
