In the Monday, June 8, 2026 the Wall Street Journal included a complete section listing the top 500 companies across all industry segments. Each company was ranked by AI readiness, Innovation, Talent, Resilience AI Readiness & Agility. The lower the ranking the better the company.

#3 Microsoft
#4 Meta Platforms

Telecommunications Services sector (only 3 companies in this sector)
#56 T-Mobile US (Agility rank 82, Innovation 283, Talent 136, AI 71)
#149 Verizon Communications (Agility rank 447, Innovation 250, Talent 155, AI 26)
#375 AT&T (Agility rank 465, Innovation 181, Talent 390, AI 33)

What do these numbers tell you? AT&T looks significantly less prepared for future success than its two major wireless competitors when all of the ranking factors are combined. The ranking appears to view AT&T as substantially weaker in attracting, retaining, developing, or positioning its workforce for future needs than its peers.

"AT&T has some innovative capabilities, but the organization is viewed as bureaucratic, slow to adapt, and less successful at developing and retaining the talent needed for future growth."

That combination can be especially damaging in a "future readiness" ranking because future performance increasingly depends on AI adoption, digital transformation, and workforce quality rather than simply owning a large network.

From an investor's perspective, the most concerning number in the table is probably not the innovation rank, it is the 390 talent rank, because that sees AT&T as having a weaker human-capital foundation than either Verizon or T-Mobile.

You should sit in your car outside of whatever office you are assigned to around 3:30 PM and really start to honestly evaluate what the quality looks like as employees start to leave. Do people look energetic and trendy in professional clothing like they have good attitudes or are they overweight in disheveled clothes having difficulty making it to their cars in the parking lot? I’ve had family members picking me up comment on how people coming out of the building look like they are about to go on a Dollar Tree run or walk laps around the mall. Many do not give the vibe of having technical competency. They look like the dregs of humanity.

There's also the issue of all the talent that's left and none are saying positive things to family, friends, network about this place. Those that I've stayed in touch with are actively telling people to run away, not worth it, toxic, and so on. I'd hate to be a recruiter for us.

5 days a week doesn't help but what we all witness from most of our leaders is even worse. 390th is spot on.

If AT&T is ranking near the bottom of its peer group in talent readiness while simultaneously pursuing one of the most rigid RTO policies in the industry, it’s fair to ask whether those decisions are helping or hurting its ability to attract and retain talent.

The most telling number on that list isn’t AT&T’s innovation rank. It’s the talent rank: 390th… But honestly, is anyone surprised?

For the last 2-3 years leadership has been sending a clear message to employees - flexibility doesn’t matter, feedback doesn’t matter, and if you don’t like it, there’s the door.

The company took one of the few things employees consistently valued and turned it into a five-day mandate. Then it doubled down when people objected. Since then, I’ve never seen so many experienced employees leave.

Future readiness isn’t just AI and technology. It’s whether you can attract and retain the people capable of building that future.

T-Mobile ranks #56 overall. AT&T ranks #375.

One company is viewed as a destination for talent. The other is forcing employees into offices to satisfy a presence report while wondering why engagement, retention, and morale keep declining.

A talent rank of 390 doesn’t happen by accident. It’s the result of years of decisions that made it harder to attract people, easier to lose them, and increasingly difficult to convince the best employees to stay.

This is what happens when you use RTO policies for layoffs without caring who you lose.
