I need to relocate my family of 4 to hub in 2 months. My spouse has lost her job recently and going through tough time emotionally. Anxiety is taking a very big toll on us and I don’t even know where to start with the move. So much to do to in terms of paperwork and I feel like heading to a psych wardl. I need more time to move but HR won’t agree.
Can anyone share their moving experience?

If you're planning to move to Texas, don't sell your house if possible. Rent it out as you may find that you need to move back. Find a rental in Texas and get a feel for it in 6mths.
Are there assurances that there are no more layoffs after you relocate?
Don’t cry because it’s over,
Smile because employment at AT&T happened.
@bc , only steers and qu33rs out there, so that kind of narrows the options down a bit.
You need to think about this carefully and not make an emotional decision. AT&T is not making you move because of market forces or collaborative efficiency or any of the other BS excuses. They are making you move because they know it will get most people in your situation to accept a layoff that would, in any other situation, be deemed discrimination in court. Companies that value their employees and legitimately need to change locations will pay to move you. Understand that if you move, you are moving to a VERY low value job in a location where you have no support, and no network of contacts to improve your situation so you will have to scramble to find traction. You will also likely be paying more for housing by a substantial margin, even if only because of interest rates. Only go to Dallas if you like the economic opportunities in Dallas. Oil money lives there, and they are always hiring. Don't go because AT&T is your future, because it isn't.
@OP don’t move to Texas. Once you do they let you go, then what?
I moved to a hub and was given a layoff notice four months after I arrived. thankfully I had already been applying internally and had something in the hopper as soon as I got my notice I transitioned to my new role. If your org leader is playing the lay off game, start applying for everything you can so that you do not get caught up in the two week window of being able to apply internally .
There is no guarantee if you sell your home and uproot your family to a new location. If you move and sell your home and get laid off you’re stuck!!
@ak This person is completely right. But also, don’t let the panic of the job market push you into making a financially sinking choice to follow a job that may dissipate once you move.
Unless the area you are in now isn’t viable for any work that you and your wife qualify for OR the company is helping you move, it may be best to stay where you are and work with your wife on finding new roles.
@a5 Did you not read the post or are you just mentally stunted?
@OP, you and many others have gone through similar experiences. It is a tough situation. 1) decide if it makes sense for your full family to relocate (review finances, stage of life, quality of life at your current home, etc.) 2) decide if your family can manage with only you moving & scoping out life in hub city - this will give you some time-rent until you decide 3) if you cannot leave your home, review finances & tighten belt until you & spouse can find alternative options
Don’t get overwhelmed or discouraged, just make decisions and move forward. Be positive that it will all work out in the end regardless of which option you choose.
Op
Don't let the turkeys get you down.
I can't keep track of what is an official HUB except for Dallas and Atlanta. Can someone share the official "hubs" these days? Is it Bothell/Redmond and Middletown/Bedminster?
Aren’t all virtuals asked to move? Why will they lay off some virtuals after going to hubs? May be their projects are bad or not managed
This is a new beginning, not the end.
Do not move for this company. Dont know how many times it has to be said. If they wanted to keep you around you would not have been asked to begin with or be getting assistance.
It’s been 4 YEARS since the RTO/FTW/hub initiative was announced.
Going to be even worse after you go through all that and they lay you off anyways.
If you do it, please be sure to rent before buying a home, NOTHING is guaranteed with T.
The CEO said “T is market based no loyalty”.
Good luck to you and your family.
Don’t do it. No guarantee of not getting laid off within a year of getting there.
