Thread regarding Citigroup Inc. / Citibank / Citi layoffs

Can I get fired for going on a job interview?

My manager found out I've been job hunting and that I took some time to go to a job interview (side note, I was an id--t - do not tell your coworkers anything, they'll use it to their advantage in a second). How sc--wed am I? If the interview went well I wouldn't have cared, but it didn't, so as of now, I have no backup.

@OP

Your coworkers and even your managers will steal your ideas, solutions and work product.

Do NOT share anything.

Coworkers will double cross each other and throw each other under the Bus 🚎 and to the wolves 🐺 to protect their jobs or jobs they may want in the future.

We're NOT and NEVER friends or family. Once money 💵 changes hands (NOT a gift) in exchange for or an expectation of a product, service or labor, it's a business relationship and business transaction.

The workplace is a jungle and a Maf!a relationship. Trust NO One.

It's also like a Vidal Sassoon commercial, but the opposite: "When you don't look good, I look good.".

OP must be new to working and the corporate world based on the verbiage in his/her posting, rooky moves and naive beliefs about trusting coworkers can keep a secret.

LOL!

Is this only your first or second job out of university??

@aq

The OP did Not state whether it was an external interview (new company, Not Citi) or an internal interview (within Citi).

I take some pride in hearing a staffie is seeking a better opportunity within the firm. It reflects well on us as managers. Unfortunately, some don't always see it that way so a prior post put it best - "hey this random opportunity came up and I interviewed for it, I'm still committed to this roll 100%.". You never get ahead in this place if you don't ask. Most don't...

Loose lips sink ships and coworkers are not your friends as you have now learned. Course correct and keep mum until there’s something to tell.

Even if the OP booked a Sick Day, it's the employees' business what they do on their own Sick Day. There are HIPAA Privacy Laws in the USA.

OP could've been on a Bermuda beach on his/her Sick Day, or home with a Flu, Covid or whatever.

However, depending on how long, how many hours the external interview went, if the OP attended the external interview on Citi time without booking a Sick Day or Vacation Day, this could be a problem.

How many times have posters on this and other Internet sites told people, Your Co-workers are NOT and NEVER your friends??? Your employer and manager are also NOT and NEVER your friends. No matter if they're Nice to your face! They are All NEVER to be trusted with anything especially personal information about you.

Since the damage is done, make NO mention of it to your manager. Do NOT confirm or deny anything. If you bring up the topic, you're confirming what your Backst@bbing Snake Co-workers told the manager.

As far as you're concerned you took a few hours off from work. Think for yourself but also be creative, some excuses: got your car fixed, etc..

And as another poster said, as long as your work productivity does Not slip up, you should be in neutral territory. Not good or Not great, but not horrible either.

Depends on whether you took sick time to go to the interview or didn't book time away and went on the interview on "company time." If you didn't do either of those then you're fine.

No impact
As a manager, I know my employees are looking and there's nothing I can do. However, if their work slips, I can put them on a pip. I would highly recommend having a conversation with your boss. Play it down like "hey this random opportunity came up and I interviewed for it, I'm still committed to this roll 100%." And make sure you're still raising your hand to take on more work. Fake it till you can leave. That's business.
