Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Parental Leaves

So many people out on paternity and extended maternity leaves. Why isn't their work reassigned? Can't get anything done because their piece is an input. Irritated that this is impacting my ability to deliver upon objectives.

@OP Don't be angry. Years ago they would have assigned you their work without extra pay. At least now, you can wait for their input :)

The boss went on paternity leave for eight weeks, never logging into the computer, never calling into meetings, never dished out assignment and didn't prep his team before he left. Just gone - bye bye for 8 weeks.
Amazingly the team was happier and more productive - Hacket was correct - the LL6's are useless !!!
When the dou--e-boss doesn't give a damn, why should his team?
The LL5 is also such a wimp, this is disciplinary actionable and I hold the LL5 more accountable than the POS LL6 - My two cent since this deals with this topic.

Let's examine that for a minute and isolate the more impactful fact. If they are an employee with any sort of agency, work ethic, and ownership, what might they be expecting to accomplish out of posting this here then? Could be they lack a spine and hope their supervisor is reading instead of addressing it properly. Passive people like that rarely get what they need and their passive aggressive nature is very often a toxic element on the teams.

Ford always had maternity leave - no issue with that. Paternity leaves are relatively new. And it seems you can take them whenever you want within the 1st year So everyone naturally takes them during the summer. Employees in the past managed with only a maternity leave. Do the senior employees now get grandfathered into the paternity leave they never had? Go woke, go broke.

What issues do you have with people being out for parental leave? if they are raising kids, what they are doing is exponentially more important than what you are concerned about.

@OP. One of the many problems at Ford is the huge amount of silos. Silos not only entitle complete teams, but even single functions or processes. There is an owner for each of the processes at Ford, and there is nobody else able to do it when the owners are not present.

I was the primary owner for a couple of "things", and the secondary owner for other "things". After the layoffs of 2019 and 2022, now I am the primary and only one for all those "things". There is nobody else with the knowledge, because we are not hiring in my area, and nobody already here is interested in taking on more workload. So when I am gone, that knowledge will go with me. It will be a very steep learning curve for the person taking over my "thingies".

Some people see it as job security, but I laugh at that idea. The layoff order comes from the top, where they don't know and don't care about the specifics of our jobs. They only see "expenses", but not our contributions. So higher ups fix the budgets and the LL6s must scamble to fill the holes left by the higher ups.

BTW, I notice that other teams are also overworked, and/or disheartened by the management's decisions. So there is an increase in pushing back, in passing the hot potato to someone else. I would say that's why you have to wait until the maternity leave ends, to continue your projects. It is the simplest way of making you go away with your problems.

My advice is to let your LL6 know about the obstacles in your way, and keep working on what you can. If your LL6 complains louder than the rest, you'll get what you need. However, based on personal experience, there is a bigger chance that your project will stay stuck, until one day is canceled.

In the last years we had many "initiatives" that had an slow death, and wilted away in silence, no more mention of those, like it never happened. If you are involved in one of those projects, you better not be loud about it. Management doesn't like when an employee points out or remembers publicly their mistakes.
