Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Layoffs are coming

Leadership has been telling us for months now on various Town Halls that we have too many employees compared to our main competitors (Verizon, T-Mobile) per the revenue we make. We have 170k employees and Verizon has 110k and they make more money per employee, so we are more “bloated” than they are. There will be cuts across the board with reorgs happening. Bear down and hopefully you will make it through. Don’t put your head in the sand. If you’re union, you know it’s the low man out, but I doubt this run will affect most union folks. That will be after the management reductions first.

I've worked for Verizon and AT&T they operate very similar from a workers perspective. Difference is Verizon didn't have a CEO/Board that wanted to rule the world by making very big and risky cooperate takeovers and losing tens of billions of dollars in a 5 year span. Thus their stock price is higher. Old school mentality is still intrenched in the management for both companies.

Poll every employee in the company and ask if they would leave if they get their entitled severance pay! The, the people that would like to remain can stay and the people that no longer want to be employed by ATT get to leave! It's so simple!

If the d@mn layoffs are coming, bring it on, I'm ready! I'm sick and tired of being in limbo!
This company makes you very angry and resentful and I'm tired of feeling that way! I'd rather get laid off than have to deal with this year after year!

Correction to the employee count IP provided.

As of a couple weeks ago there were 159k. That is 10k less than the total number stated in the 3Q financial statement. We dropped 10k employees since the 3Q.

surprised att has that low of employees. they usually keep it a higher number although they should be around verizon's number. wonder who will work the strike if they let go that low.

Tough to compare AT&T and Verizon. Verizon has better workers.

Targeted layoffs Q1 and Q4 2023, estimated reduction is 40K. Rough ride looming for the new year.

The lady who is CWA represented with 37 years reminds me of those smug GM employees right before the bankruptcy. If you don't respect your employer or your job but refuse to leave, the customers will leave instead. Good luck collecting your 5-5-5 from NewTelco after the bankruptcy.

"why was ATT hiring like there's no tomorrow in 2020 and 2021 when we have also been told the company has too many employees?"

Cause they hired them at a much lower pay rate then current employees. No pension to fund. Less vacation days(PTO). No burn out factor like most of us are experiencing.

Well, I’ve got 37 years and am a CWA represented outside plant technician. Don’t really do any work, drive around, drink coffee, run errands for the wife on OT. There is only one way me and my buds are leaving…wanna guess? How about a generous enhanced offer. How about we start at 5-5-5. Don’t wanna go, AT&T can’t make me go. I’m in no rush. I’ve got all the time in the world. It’s a cushy gig!

Cuts will continue then re-hiring at a 50%+ cost savings. This is the same playbook that all of the other carriers do like Verizon. At the end of the day the carrier is only good at delivering access, Wireless + Internet that is it...

Like someone else said, you can't compare the companies because of diversity of products.

This is a lie the execs have been pushing so they can lay off older workers with impunity and hire younger, cheaper workers.

Everything that comes out of the execs mouths here is a lie, never forget that.

why was ATT hiring like there's no tomorrow in 2020 and 2021 when we have also been told the company has too many employees? Stankey answered that in his company-wide note on the "Demographic Transformation" underway. Continue purging the undesirable demographics via surplusing and hire desirables every chance you can. Keeps the woke activists off your case.

Almost none of the upcoming surpluses in 2023 will come from the "desirable" demographic pool no matter how useless they are as employees. Recipe for greatness.

pretty much. theyve been telling us for a few years now that total headcount will be around 100k. hopefully folks didnt let their skills go stale or learned some new ones. there are 218 isp providers in my state that received the infrastructure money and they need employees badly.

Layoffs will impact every sector- union and mgmt. the company cannot layoff just mgmt titles. Who maintains and supports all of those copper based products- union employees.
