Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

How would you describe exxon if it was a relationship, family or civilization?

The title says it all and we know the truth. This mess of a company can be best described by toxic, dysfunctional, hostile, depressing to be around and bad for ones health. If it was a family it would be a toxic, dysfunctional one with violence and hostility. as a relationship it would also be toxic and dysfunctional headed for divorce or separation. a civilization based on exxon would be doomed and fighting within itself. The exxon civilization would collapse upon itself as a corrupt empire. Only the ones who have suffered at exxon know the horrors of working at this toxic, vile , disgusting monster of a company.

ExxonMobil is now a "transactional job only" company. Long term 30+ year careers no longer exist.

Agree - it’s a job and we work with incredible people. The Corp is shaking up every legacy process and the new norm they are driving us to define will be in a storming phase for a long time. Adapt or take your talents elsewhere. No one is holding you hostage.

Treat the job as 100% transactional contract that requires annual renewal.

Then you will feel much better.

@dz You might need therapy.

And no, I didn’t read your wall of text.

I do my job, log off, and collect my check. I sleep well at night. I wish you the same.

@da “This is just a job” is like saying a haunted escape room is just “a building.”
A job usually has clear outputs, measurable goals, defined ownership, and people producing something tangible.
Instead we have calendar Tetris, visibility theater, and meetings where fourteen people discuss “alignment” while one exhausted gray-haired engineer quietly tries to survive underneath layers of:
“be more visible,”
“build your network,”
“increase stakeholder engagement,”
and “great point, thanks for raising that.”
Meanwhile the engineer explains the same critical dependency for the fourth time, and right on schedule Chad from the Strategic Synergy Solutions Council asks whether the issue has been socialized with the appropriate stakeholders and if maybe a recurring touchpoint would help drive alignment.
Nobody knows who owns anything.
Majority of the the org communicates entirely through vague PowerPoint arrows.
The people actually holding the system together are too busy working to perform enthusiasm about working.
So no… people aren’t crazy for comparing it to a civilization, family, cult, or simulation.
Because eventually it becomes unclear whether the goal is producing oil or producing meetings about producing oil.
The only upside is they are paying us decently to participate in this weird experiment.

Undermining by petty people seems to be the flavor of the year.

@OP It’s not a relationship, family,
or a civilization…

It’s a job.

That’s it.

The sooner you get that into your head, the sooner you’ll stop being miserable.

@ag You're 100% correct, jobs being taken from competent folks and given to unqualified favorites located elsewhere in the world. Management lies and misinformation to hide what they're doing. Savings? Not in $$$! The only saving is of their buddies!

I came to realize about a year ago that one can have Stockholm Syndrome with work.

Definitely dysfunctional and toxic. I would even say evil based on the way they destroy employees lives. It is one of the worst places I have ever worked. The way management lies and protects favs is sickening and the way they destroy innocents is inhumane.
