COBRA after Severance Ends

Has anyone had experience with using COBRA when severance ends? From what I read, there is a gap between the last official date and getting COBRA information, and you get retroactive coverage once you pay your premium.

Please let me know your experience.
Thanks!

Cobra goes back in time. I believe up to 60 days. So if you don’t want it and something happens then ….

COBRA coverage picks up after your severance ends. My insurance ended 12/31/25. I contacted the COBRA line on 1/2/26, as 1/1/26 was a holiday. They instated my COBRA coverage, retroactive to 1/1/26. I now have it pulled automatically each month from my bank to cover the monthly premium.

It should be in severance documents which are multiple pages and will take time to read.
