Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

For those who stayed. What did you do different?

  • Were you the one writing AI first or AI driven in your linkedin profile?
  • Did you posted that “ I would like to share that I recently completed blah blah blah AI course” too often in linkedin?
  • Are you the one who bluffs in meetings and throw big words all day long but dont do sh-t?
  • Did you kissed the bottom really well all these years?

I am geniunely curious. What did you do right?

Eventually, it will be YOU.

(Unless you make it to the ELT, and then you have a job for life, even if the company is crumbling beneath you.)

The blade cut very close to me and I didn't get impacted, so I'll call being in the right place at the right time.

Getting laid off is not about anything you did wrong except maybe not looking for other opportunities sooner. It’s a them problem. Poor management, poor planning, compromised strategies that no longer focus on quality. I gave them my all, won maxim awards, and I do not regret my quality output. I regret staying too long

Thank god I’m too employed to be bothered by this insult.

definitely didn’t play politics. I thought Nike hated how openly I spoke up and shared my strong opinions all the time. I worked long hours, delivered a high volume of work, and stepped in even when I was burned out. I’ve also been very vocal about my interest in AI and innovation. I don’t take anything for granted, but I genuinely enjoy building and advancing new ideas. might be safe for now, but who knows what the future holds. Layoffs are always a reality at Nike.

That's a pretty common reaction I'm hearing from people around me right now (including myself) - "why not me?, am I next?" But, I a) don't think there is any logic to it that doesn't involve bottom lines, and b) "why not me?" makes it personal; and this is stressful enough without having take on blame for something I have no control over whatsoever. This is the way companies work now, it's been growing and getting worse for the past few decades; really since the end of pensions.

lower salary than others really

nothing in particular, no one looks at what you do here, they just look for a reason to cut you, so say nothing, keep salary low and don't do much work and you'll raise your odds of lasting....until you age out.....plus 10 years is a bad thing, so start looking around 7-8 years in, at the most....

I played video games in the afternoon.

Honestly no clue. Just didn’t draw the short stick. Lost everyone I was friends with so now just gonna be another loner on campus. Lost those that have mentored me into a better engineer for my entire time here.

People who are holding on - did not do anything different from others who are let go - reasoning why is a question for the leadership to answer. I know a lot of talented persons are let go

Yeah, I agree. It's got nothing to do with talent or skills. For example, say 30 people have to go, in that division, let's play darts, put their photos on the board. And give me the darts...

It really has nothing to do with you. I have no clue why some of my immediate coworkers were let go and I wasn't. I'm not underpaid for my position and level either, I am on the higher end of the range if anything. The selection process doesn't seem to have an immediately obvious rationale. (other than shifting all work to ITC, ofc)

Nope, none of that. That’s what leadership does and they make poor decisions everyday.
Don’t take your anger out on those of us that are crushed we didn’t get a package.
Yes the rah rah people posting in our team channels are still here but that doesn’t define those of us that roll our eyes at that garbage.

Thats a poor way to look at things. A lot of talented people were let go. That's true. People that did a real bulk of the work in some cases. I assure you, it did not have to do with skill or delivery.

But there are great people that still work here. Just because their neck wasn't on the block this time, which is random luck, you blame them and want them to cast them as kiss-as--s or failures.

Grow up child.
