The next to go is field staff. Bloated and redundant mpt positions.

Agree with the others that Ops have somewhat been insulated, but their day is coming. Since 2010 IOL has been heavily compared against all XOM sites and Eastern Canada downstream has been slowly losing investment and sending Ops down south. The highly integrated pipeline network in the midwest and the Eastern half of the country is working against sites like Sarnia who sells directly into the U.S. midwest. When XOM actuaries realize a product or process is cheaper to produce south of the border and still send product back up through the pipelines or rail, the next unit closes. This will keep happening until IOL is fully bled to death.

Field staff (Upstream Ops, Refineries, Midstream) were mostly insulated from the current round of cuts and thought they were safe. Sorry Ops people, you are next in line for "transformation."

No offence to the OP, but 50% of the above field staff was just made redundant. Read the tea leaves. Eventually, yes.

If your job can be done from a low-cost center, it will be. If your job can be done for less money by a 3rd party, it will be.

The only thing Imperial does to lower op costs is cut cut cut. No innovation, just cut benefits, outsource labour, and defer maintenance. Mindless XOM drones in the executive suite listening to McKinsey and pushing new GBC processes that stifles innovation and cost saving.

Meanwhile competitors are hiring Canadians, streamlining process, and will be all the better for it.

There have been massive cuts on any above field workforce. Seems like next in line is frontline operations roles. Headcount reductions, moving work to managed service providers, outsourcing, and automation. No one is safe any more.

More of the same in the future. Outsourcing will continue in order to meet Exxon targets.
