Thread regarding U.S. Bank layoffs

Let's have some levity

For those who worked through the late 1990, what's one thing you're glad younger folks won't have to put up with?

I remember printing out hundreds of pages just to review a document and having to track changes by hand with a pen. The paper cuts alone were brutal. What other dinosaur era work habits are you happy died off?

As an auditor, I remember vouching totals on green bar reports by running the numbers on a ten key and stapling the adding machine tape to the green bar report in my work papers.

@bg I think it was called carbon paper to make carbon copies. There is also stencil - holes get cut when types on them and then one can make lots of copies using a stencil duplicating machine !

We had a general customer service line that all of us were expected to take turns to answer. Now I don't even have a dedicated phone number.

Typing customer communication using two sheets of paper with an ink page (I can’t even remember what it was called) between so we would have a copy for the file and if you made a mistake you had to start over. It sure taught accuracy!

Calling into an 800 number with a pin to have a conference call and not having any idea who was actually on the call without taking attendance.

This might be pre-dinosaur era : Sorting punch cards after they were scattered on the floor ;o) Of course, you need a card sorter; even then you don't know if you got all of them right - especially if it is a COBOL program !!
