Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Struggling post lay off

I got laid off in November and I have not found another job. I am feeling very depressed of my situation. One of the hiring managers I interviewed with told me he cant believe Verizon would lay off someone with my experience. But I didnt get selected for the job. I feel like there is a stigma. Makes them question with all the experience and accomplishments I have I couldnt hold a job. My ex colleagues who didnt get laid off have found jobs externally. It was easy for them to land another job.

For the person getting nasty texts from someone they no longer work with... block that person. You don't work together? You are no longer in the same boat. Let that person go over the Naigra Falls in their own barrel. Do NOT let them take you hostage in THEIR barrel. (Eff 'em)

To OP, if you were here any amount of time, you are already a survivor of all the rifs that came before. I know many massively smart people who were great & generous coworkers and some managers on the list who were great leaders. Smart people looking to hire good people should be smart enough to figure out you weren't riffed due to a personal insufficiency. Keep your head UP. While there are a lot of people looking, you were raised here... trial by fire... and remember: heat & pressure create diamonds. If you can find something part time that brings in more than unemployment, do that (if you want) because getting out in the world will help your brain. What's meant for you won't pass you... be open that your skills may be VERY useful (and compensated) in industries outside Telecom. A lot of our skills actually do translate into the Hospital & Healthcare environments. Keep the faith, keep pressing forward, your job is out there.

It may take a while— but it’s ALWAYS A CHANGE FOR THE BETTER. Happy to be out of Verizon, it was an Obvious dead-end after witnessing the first year of endless employee churn and constant revolving door of colleagues, management/ upper management. Every month the Bosses reinvented the wheel to perpetuate the illusion that their own jobs were justified— So, How does that Stock price keep plummeting after all the Layoffs and cost cutting. They CANT Prop up that su---r UP NO MATTER WHAT THEY DO ….. so the only “numbers” or metrics that mattered were the Artificially propped stock that no amount of manipulating and cost cutting could sustain. Ohh well, happy to watch the circus 🎪 🤡 from the outside and glad to be off the hamster wheel.

I’m on a similar boat , I landed a new role in a new field but the onboarding was horrible and I mean absolutely horrible and the pay was 35% less than what I was getting so I quit within the first two weeks. Many tell me I’m stupid for doing that without locking in something new first and maybe I am but one thing for certain is that those first two weeks were strong enough reflection of what was to come and I know that in my spirit I wouldn’t be content there. I’m mad at my self because now I’m facing losing my unemployment with nothing till I land a new role But truly VZ set the bar even at the entry level roles.

@cz there are so many a--holes. my former colleague kept texting me and blaming me for the lay off. He accused of so many things that are not true. I doubt that my manager has said those things. I never worked for this colleague so he wouldnt know my situation, my work deliverables. He keeps bringing me down for some reason. maybe that is his way to feel good about himself. I dont get why he goes out of his way to text me and say mean things. I can just block him. I didnt say anything before he gives me an update on the team. but it is not really good for my mental health.

There’s this really thin, if nonexistent line in situations like this where an interviewer trying to show empathy or validation can give someone false hope that they may be a shoe-in.

@ap @ap Layoffs are generally business decisions made by people who know little to nothing about business so yes, it's definitely not a reflection of your self-worth for sure.

It took two years, but I’ve finally moved on from Verizon. The leadership I dealt with there—specifically at the Director and VP level—was a major disappointment, but I’m not letting that define my career. I’m starting over now, and I’m more motivated than ever to prove what I can do

With other words, The past 24 months have been a lesson in persistence. Despite a toxic leadership environment at my previous stop, I’ve secured a new role. I’m starting from the ground up, but I’m doing so with a massive amount of momentum and a point to prove.

I will now come after Vz customers and take everything from them if I can.

Curious to know, did you take advantage of that "training" that they are still tougting about all over the news. I wonder what the % was that used it and went on to bigger and better!

Remember that your worth has nothing to do with your job! You can go make a difference for others while you look by volunteering or just assisting those in need. It will help you keep your chin up!

Do not give into your thoughts and stay positive. You've got this. I was laid off in 2019 and it took eight months to find something comparable. During that time, I was underemployed to make ends meet, but it helped me appreciate the job I found that much more. I believe in you, people that love and care about you do as well. Keep your head up. The job market is tough for now. Although I'd advise against it, once that six month period is over, worst case you go back to Verizon. Best of luck to you and do not take ANY of this personally. It's hard, but it WILL get better!

A layoff is a business decision. It says nothing about your worth. Nothing about what you're capable of. Nothing about where you're going.

Your next chapter hasn't been written yet. That's not failure — that's a blank page. Waiting for you ...

You have this ...have patience and keep doing your part ...network, socialize...

There is a stigma but it only matters if you let it. What have most corporate people accomplished? Changing font sizes and colors for decks? Don’t let them belittle you. Stand strong in what you bring to the table and with confidence it will work out eventually.
