Two Week Notice When Resigning?

Is this a requirement.

I have a horrible manager, she's been pure evil since day one.

I've had it and I want to quit. I know she'll want me to transition mountains of work I am doing for her but I'd be delighted if I can just leave. There is nobody else to transition this except to her, and that will be torture in itself as I know what she will put me through.

So, is a 2wk notice a requirement or just a professional curtesy?

Yes of course it is a requirement. If you don’t give 2 weeks you must stay.

why sacrifice your financial stability for a manager with daddy issues? focus on job hunting while doing the bare minimum to stay employed. Wait for a layoff to secure unemployment, and document everything for HR and a lawyer. Let the company handle the legal fallout while you stay on the payroll.

They are even most aggressive toward women who they view as 'competition'. I think the two week notice thing is you ever want to be rehired. I quit my job in investment banking and stopped showing up the next day. It’s simple form you fill out in workday stating when your last day is so they can cut off all of your access.

It’s staggering that Nike continues to value metrics over management quality, effectively signaling that abuse is acceptable as long as the numbers are met. It makes you wonder how many people are quietly enduring these working conditions. The key is to refuse them any power over your spirit. View these managers through a clinical lens: they are essentially 'gremlins' with underdeveloped frontal cortex —likely products of their own past childhood trauma and fundamentally incapable of healthy human connection and love. When you look at them with pity rather than fear, you reclaim your power.

Oregon is an at-will employment state, meaning employers or employees can terminate the employment relationship at any time, for any reason that is not illegal. While notice or cause is not required for termination, exceptions exist preventing termination for illegal discrimination, retaliation, or violations of public policy.

I know it's painful but I'd still give 2 weeks and do the minumum. just let her come to you and ask questions vs. you over work and prepare all details for the transition. leave on a good term not for her but for yourself and for those who enjoys working with you.

Here is what I did and it worked. I hated my manager too and still hate her.

I gave 4 weeks notice, then when they asked me where I was going. I told them I can’t tell them contractually and scared them and they ended my access and I got 4 weeks of pay plus PTO.

You just let them assume you are going to another firm in the industry. Nothing wrong with omission

@a9 Expecting them to approve your PTO is a long shot—they likely won't. A better approach is to research your rights and consult an employment lawyer to build a strategic exit plan.

If you have 2 weeks of PTO, give 2 weeks notice and take PTO for your final time there.

Before you hand in your resignation, please consult with an employment lawyer. Quitting without a backup plan or a bridge to your next role is risky. If you stay until a layoff occurs, you’re entitled to severance and unemployment benefits. Given the mistreatment you’ve experienced, a lawyer could help you negotiate a much better exit package. However, if your mental health is at a breaking point and you have the financial cushion, feel free to walk. One day's notice is perfectly acceptable—after all, that’s all the notice they’d give you.

You definitely do not need to give them two weeks. I agree with the previous poster that 2 to 3 days is sufficient.

I've had someone provide 72 hours notice. HR didn't penalize them. There's steps the manager has to do as you exit, so 72 hours is a time crunch on the manager if that's your goal.
