This is an insane fumble. I tried the jersey's on the second day in the NCS and noticed this immediately. The fact this went through cycles and cycles of "innovation" and "testing" but no one noticed is insane to me.
More likely a VP trying to make an armhole interesting, without understanding how things are actually made. As well as yes, there has been much talent loss through layoffs and expertise gladly leaving the company.
