Thread regarding Open Text Corp. layoffs

Do you know why we're failing so badly?

There is no follow through. There is always a new initiative being introduced. Big kickoff meetings, lots of excitement, and then nothing really happens. Within a few weeks, attention shifts to something else. How can anybody take us seriously when things are so dysfunctional?

@s4 the AI bots are the only trainers. They are the only ones with tribal knowledge.

@qa Due to the lack of previous investment in training, they had to source trainers from the support engineers. As most experienced support engineers has been layoff, your chances of experienced trainer is luck of the draw.

@cr The live training here is mediocre at best. Some products are better than others. Most of the live training I've had, the instructor reads the powerpoints word for word, doesn't demo anything, and when a student gets stuck, can't fight their way out of a wet paper bag. If I had to pay for it, I'd be pretty upset.

If you've been on FY kickoff presentations, or OT world, you'd have seen some chatter on 'user adoption'. User adoption is making sure your customers know how to use the products we sold them, so they are happy and spend more money with us. That's crowed about as an innovation when in reality, it's what everyone else in the industry has done for decades.

@cr That's typical. You need to be virtual for training but RTO on premise because it suits us.

Management squandered lots of good ideas. Take the employee tech certification or cross training. Finally, we can get some updated training like in the old HP days. Travel and meet virtual colleagues, build relationship, train together with customers and share skills.
However, mgmt did not have a training plan before hand or they would have realised training dept has no investment for a long time. Not enough trainers as most have all been layoff. Training material are way out of date or not accessible. You waste your time trying to get certification for new products under pressure and without actually learning anything. You have to find time for self training during increased workload. Waste of time and priorities without tangible results.
In the end, it was virtual training and forced to get as many certifications as possible as the mgrs compete with each other for the most number of certified staff. Mgrs do not want to hear about the issues. They just want the numbers to make themselves looks good.
Managers with only self interest and not really there to facilitate or make the work more efficient or better for the staff.

OpenText executives only care about quick wins to feed into the stories they tell the board, shareholders and customers. They don’t care about reality, rather just supporting a narrative that sounds like they are doing all sorts of things to make our products better, make employees more efficient and lowering operating costs.

They don’t want to lie so they look for middle management to action things without any follow through. And the employees are forced to do needless work or adhere to policies that are the latest corporate trend (like return to office). And the ones that comply feel duped and employees that don’t do not get punished other than potentially getting laid off which is want most people want to they get severance to take time off and look for a new job. Employees are all beaten down and honestly couldn’t care less about the success of the company. It’s all about surviving until you can leave.

The company needs to be acquired or be completely overhauled (which won’t be possible unless they go private).

An old tech company is like watching an old comedian with no new material. It’s just sad.

“Do you know why we're failing so badly?”

The answer is simple: Tom Jenkins.

He is the lead clown of this clown show.

We want to build great product. However, the permission, the resources, those guys, those teams who manage those resources have old school , low skilled policy, recommendations and reasons either some weird security compliance or saying”it is what it is”.
We often get rejected whenever we request something.

Man, our company is failing and you just care about non-sense processes or policies? Common, saving company, building great product is actual more important now

That’s why Management are paid the big bucks.

Their ability to introduce a new initiative on the fly without any consideration of how the business actually operates or to take on board how their last initiative was an utter failure is beyond compare.

We are so lucky to have such a gifted Management team.
