So, where are we at with Phase II?

Anything confirmed? Rumors are all over the place.

@1qn It really does seem to come down to group leadership with RTO. Some groups are adamant about 5 days while others down give a rats a-s. Its a sh-t show.

Apparently in new RTO policies, companies usually wait 3-4 months to compile data before deciding to tighten the sc--ws or accepting compliance as is.

Since we're a media company and not finance or a FAANG, ill be they accept what it is. People who are fearful will do the 5 days religiously, while others who do 2-3 will be left alone. If HR is measuring compliance by average days by team, its the 5 day sheep making us all look good!

@1n7 There is a lot of "RTO for thee but not for me" going around. And its also about who you report to and how liked you are. There are some well liked people who live in central and south jersey who were coming to the office in Jan that havent been there in weeks.

@1n7 I think I overheard this actual conversation before

A:
ok serious question… are we actually supposed to be going into the office lol

B:
“supposed to”? yes
“required in any meaningful, enforceable way”? unclear

A:
right because the emails feel VERY intense
but the consequences feel… imaginary?

B:
exactly
it’s like:
“we are monitoring badge swipes 👁️”
followed by absolutely nothing happening

A:
i’m starting to think they can’t enforce it

B:
same
with the merger + layoffs already under scrutiny, firing people for not sitting at a desk in midtown 3 days a week might not be the best look

A:
so instead we get corporate theater

B:
100%
this isn’t a policy
it’s a performance of a policy

A:
lol
“the office is where work happens”
(except when everyone is at home… working)

B:
they need to say it for optics
investors, regulators, whoever is watching this whole thing

A:
but actually enforcing it would create… more problems than it solves

B:
yep
so we live in this weird zone where:
• it’s mandatory
• it’s tracked
• it’s emphasized
• it’s… not enforced

A:
corporate schrödinger’s attendance policy

B:
exactly

A:
do you think the real strategy is just… make it annoying enough that people leave on their own

B:
attrition by inconvenience
honestly wouldn’t shock me

A:
kind of brilliant
kind of exhausting

B:
modern workplace in one sentence

A:
what’s your strategy

B:
simple:
• show face occasionally
• don’t ask questions
• accept free food when available
• remain professionally vague

A:
“corporate survival via minimal friction”

B:
put it on my linkedin

A:
see you… intermittently… in the place where work allegedly happens

B:
if our schedules align with the narrative

I feel like there is a chance a lot of stuff is on hold due to the wbd merger
