When was the last time you had a 1:1 with your manager? Do you have yearly goals you commit to? Do you receive a year end review?

In IT, people who start at a low level and stay with the company get promoted into roles they are not qualified for, they just happened to be in the right place at the right time, making it convenient to fill the seat that’s open. This has been going on for years and the results are people with a director or vice president title who don’t understand how to manage, develop, and grow a team. It’s why we have people running around that are in all of the right clothing and shoes but none of the skills for being effective in their role. In this situation, there won’t be people development activities such as 1:1’s, goals, and reviews. A strong leader knows that developing the team and keeping them built up is a top priority. The fact that IT leadership of this company do nothing in this area tells you all you need to know.
You poor IT folks. Across the floor in TPD land, we have 360* team-based reviews, "coming soon"! ...check calendar... And boy will they be great, they've been Coming Soon 4-5 years now since M took over.
1:1---never
