Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

This is not a post about AI. I barely do any feature work anymore. I feel like with everything happening in the US and the global situation, I just have zero motivation to work or produce work for these companies. Just waiting to see how long I can keep this going, wondering how many are on the same boat.

With everything going on it's hard to take anything seriously anymore. And knowing that my company is trying everything they can to replace me with either AI or someone offshore doesn't make me interested in helping them fulfill their profit goals.

At the same time, I don't want to lose my job in this economy either. But how do you stay motivated like this?

@t2 that’s a good question in terms of motivation. I’m going through the same thing. But my current priority is going to be my mental health and pushing back on unrealistic expectations. Like im not going to work extra hours anymore and aligning with work that is actually at my grade level.

@er I totally feel this comment. There are days that I just want to reduce the income need and wonder if I can make some sort of a living with a Tig torch in my hand, doing something that feels real.

AI has taken most of the joy out of coding for me. I'm not saying its not useful for building stuff and productivity, but prompting and writing docs for an AI to do things just isn't something I enjoy doing.

100% agree I could care less about AI, the bubble needs to burst ASAP. Sick of offshoring too Ive lost 3 jobs in past 15 years to it and saw many friends gone also for cheap cr-p labor. The more they hyperventilate about AI and stress we learn and use it the more Im just ready to retire. Id rather do a manual job as at walmart if everything goes AI.
This is not the career I started in IT for.

I’m feeling the same way. Just absolutely terrible morale right now. I just can’t wait for the bubble to burst because most of the economies of these things don’t make any sense. It’s sad how much time we are burning tokens for a stupid leadership demo vs fixing customer bugs or building features customers are asking for.

This is the Cisco way, at least with respect to software.

Cisco acquires companies with already-built products. Cisco employees will only ever do maintenance work guided by an endless stream of isolated Jira tickets.

This isn't accidental. I have sat and listened to a senior leader say right out loud to dozens that the company doesn't trust staff to do original/feature work. It wasn't put so directly, but that was the gist.

If you want to do original design and feature work, just leave. But don't expect it to be much better elsewhere honestly.
