Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Nike stock hits 55. Down $7 YTD

How do we keep haw a declining stock prices. All my ESPP is worth nothing. Putting money on my bank account at 0% would be worth more

The math never maths. We got English majors running the demand planning and analysis teams. They never took a business class in their life and keep recreating the same tools every 36 months and calling it innovation.

@a9 hmm yet Adidas just had a record year. The math ain’t mathin. Nike leadership needs more accountability, not less. Don’t do them any favors.

Thinking abstractly in the modern stock market. All you need to say is the word AI and the stock goes up. How can Nike be beat so bad. That hertz saying they are using AI and hit a new record; while Nike is barely standing and out ceo flying around in a plane and laying people off.

"That’s the very short and simple answer. Share price ultimately reflects value, and these days Nike is not producing value at anything close to the way it previously did."

Actually share price can very often be about Market sentiment…

There are many companies with absurd valuations/stock price with ridiculous earnings. “yes someday maybe they will turn things around but hey for now lets price the stock to the moon because… reasons?"

Stock chart looks awful and the company is still trading at a premium. Best course of action is to short the stock.

The current stock price can be easily explained with one word: margin(s).

“Margin(s)” show how efficiently and effectively a company is operating. Right now Nike is dealing with operating margins that haven’t been so low since the 1980’s. I know this because out of curiosity I looked it up.

To fix margins you need to sell more product, and/or increase profitability, and/or reduce costs. A company uses whatever levers it has.

Because innovation and marketing at Nike have largely disappeared (my opinion) while competition has simultaneously increased, Nike needs to look hard at reducing its cost structure. Reducing headcount will need to play a significant role in that.

That’s the very short and simple answer. Share price ultimately reflects value, and these days Nike is not producing value at anything close to the way it previously did.

Nice on the $35 share price.

I did see this comments, during the 2014-2024 10Y time period, the SP500 went up 290%; Nike nearly broke 100% on that $35 price point.

@ac I purchased stock back in 2014 for a little under $35 a share. Thankfully it has not sunk this low.

when you sell on the first day of ESPP, you don't make 15%. You pay 32% federal and 10% Oregon on the gain; then the stock drops the day of. So, you make like 3%....

Sounds like you need s finance class

You need a better financial advisor - sell your espp shares same day they vest. You ALWAYS make 15%.

That is not a global pull back. That is poor leadership fee and clear. Thanks for playing their performance.

Nike stocks is worth less today than 10 years ago.

A9, let’s not make excuses

Yes, by all means let's draw lots of quick conclusions about a single performance metric that is heavily influenced by global events and macroeconomic factors. Look, I agree Nike is absolutely on the struggle bus lately. Things are getting grim but what's happening right now is a global pullback of almost all stocks (unless you're selling oil or defense contracts). Hey, what a shock, a war in the Middle East might affect things here at home?

The markets don’t like layoffs anymore. $300 million earmarked for reductions won’t send the price up anymore like it used to.
