It used to be that when a potential employer would call for a reference all that it could be told was that the candidate worked at, in this case, Wells Fargo. Is this still the case; or does Wells Fargo give out additional information, such as why they are no longer employed or quality of their work

They won’t risk lawsuit by giving any commentary. Just verification information.
WF avoids anything other than employment verification because any comment that can be interpreted negatively can lead to a lawsuit.
The only exception I know of is if you’re FINRA/securities licensed (e.g. Series 7). When you’re terminated a notation goes into your permanent dossier, which future prospective employers can see, as to whether it was voluntary or involuntary. If the latter, some nuance is added indicating whether it was a layoff or a firing. If the latter of those, if it’s due to an egregious compliance violation, it will go into your public Brokercheck report for all to see.
This hasn’t been the case at large corporations in over 20-30 years. Past employment can only be verified through The Work Number.
Policy is still the same, that you worked here and when. Anything else is a potential lawsuit.
