Thread regarding Capital One layoffs

Should I Even Bother??

I applied for an Administrative position there and got an interview scheduled. Should I even bother?? Are layoffs common there?
I'm dealing with my 5th layoff due to corporate restructuring - I can't handle another unstable workplace!
Should I just cancel???

To the original poster. I commend you to ask around to find out first because many people don't. You dodged a bullet because the reality is it's much worse then everyone thinks from the outside looking in. Much much worse. I can't even post those things here because it'll be taken down because its so incendiary.

Peace. You'll find another employer very soon.

@f9 I worked there for one year up until December 2025. The absolute most toxic environment I've ever worked in because of stack ranking. I've never witnessed so much backstabbing, undermining, and outright lying in my 20+ year career. Performance benchmarks are constantly moving so you never know here you really stand despite regular check-ins. The place is the Amazon of banking.

@f9 you should cancel your credit card because they mismanage all customer data. Your data like those of all customers are grossly mishandled.

Update: I just looked up what "stack rankings" are and cancelled my interview. I have never heard of such a toxic system! They are seriously using this method currently? If so, I am so sorry and hope that you all find better places to work. No one should have to be subjected to such demeaning and demoralizing management practices.
Life is too short for that nonsense. I'm thinking of cancelling my Capital One card now. I can't support a company that abuses its employees. Again, thank you so much for the honest responses. Very eye opening!

@ew I'm curious - what are stack rankings? And PIPs are performance plans, right? Those are common??
I know I was given a low performance review (2.9) for the first time in my entire life at Walgreens because they didn't want to give me a merit increase. My boss put RIDICULOUS things on my review just to justify the low score. Then he got laid off before me! Haha! Anyway, is that what they do there too?
The job market does su-k so I'm still considering possibly interviewing. I have a horrible feeling about all of this though.

It's a nightmare. They use stack rankings so every 6 months they must fire 15% of all employees. Don't go.

Thank you all for the honest feedback. I had a feeling that Capital One was just another typical toxic corporate nightmare.
I've had enough of that already.
I hope we all find better options!

Agreed. get the job fast then start planning exit. It’s death if you don’t win the popularity contest twice a year. People are transactional because they know others could just vanish at any time. Even those there for years acknowledge it but stay around because they are at the top of the new meat trying to survive the next cut. That gives leaders a sense of power knowing everyone needs to please them or be axed. There’s no teams or boundaries. You float and try to do work that you can claim. VP level leadership and engagement is non existent. It can be cut throat and people will throw you under the bus in a group without pause. Leaders lack empathy and humanity. Anywheee but here. You’ve been warned.

If you are in need of a job immediately, go take the interview (and job) if you get it and get ready for your next job.

It takes about an year to year and half to get PIP-ed out if you don't su-k up to the entrenched management. But this should buy you some time.
