Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

I don't know how to deal with constant threat of layoffs

I'm searching for another job, and that helps. Somewhat. Because it's also made me realize just how hard finding one will be. The constant talk about offshoring and AI is starting to panic me. I have a family. A mortgage. Bills that keep climbing. The fear is almost paralyzing. And please don't tell me to just "deal with it." You all know we're hanging by a thread. So, how are you dealing with it?

Be a grown up buddy. Life is hard. Any job can give you the axe at any time. Restructures and reorgs are just part of corporate life. Face the challenge head on, dont crawl up in a ball in a corner and sulk. Its not impossible to find a job, there are jobs just as good if not better out there if you are willing to put the time and energy in to find them. You will got TONS of rejections...thats just part of the game. You will be rejected for jobs are you completely qualified for...thats just part of the game. The reality is the reality, no matter if you like it or not. "Paralyzing fear" is just a fancy way to say you are weak. Be strong. Therapy has become trendy and it drives me absolutely nuts. Some people need professional help for very tramatic events...NEWSFLASH-losing a job inst one of those. You are a number, we are all a number. We are all replaceable. You job DOES NOT DEFINE YOU. The only way you life is going to crumble and fall apart is if YOU LET THAT HAPPEN. Stay strong. Resist the weakness mentality that new age America is pushing. Resist the weakness mentality that social media normalizes. WAKE UP.

I can’t control the future. I can control my mind and live in the present. Whilst I do not like that I could potentially be laid off, I’m happy with my career as is. That being said I will not be job searching just cause I’m worried I might be laid off. You’ll get a severance, don’t leave empty handed to another company who could also lay you off later.

The only thing you can do is assume that you WILL be laid off at some point. Maybe not the next one coming up, or the one after that, but eventually, your number will come up. Given this assumption, make a realistic plan for what you will do when it happens. Update it periodically. When the hammer finally does fall, execute your plan. If you've been with the company a long time, you'll get a decent package, and can collect unemployment. That should give you time to execute your plan and get a new job (or change careers, start a business, or retire, etc....).

I also agree with others that you need to find coping mechanisms, like therapy or other distractions that help you to relax. I've heard some people say don't take any vacation time, so you can get paid for it. But I feel you need to use your PTO to maintain your sanity in this toxic work environment.

It is what it is. Everyone has to figure out for themselves how to deal.Cut expenses and get a therapist. I am serious about that, no job is permanent and some people need help dealing with uncertainty. Not sure what anyone else anyone can tell you.

I’m in the same boat. I think all we can do is arm ourselves with “getting ahead of it” and start applying and looking for new jobs. It su-ks but the best time to look for a job is when you don’t need one, as they say.

Eventually, you get tired of fearing and get into "whatever will be, will be" mode
