Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Hard work not noticed or rewarded

Had a mid career experienced hire employee tell me he just likes to keep his head down and let his work speak for itself. He is on the fast track for a PIP. The psychos will notice and take huge advantage of him. I tried to warn him.

Yes I was destroyed at exxon. I did major innovative work beyond my pay scale. I did engineering work as a technician. I liked to fix and solve problems. I was rewarded by the group I was in at the time. Then came b town the beginning of the end for me. I now work at a place where I can contribute and they value my experience. Exxon is a place where they tear you down in order to get you to work harder and longer. Every ranking session is about what you did not do. As they said you can always improve. I would never put any improvement on any of my knowledgeable others feedback. I was called in and told that I needed to include at least one area for improvement. I refused and tge said then they were not going to use my feedback for these employees. I did not play the exxon game. I was and exceptional employee but it did not matter. Now i am exceptional somewhere else and it feels right. Don't let exxon get you down find another that you can suceed at.

@bd I am not even EM but from another major but can totally relate to this comment. I think it's same mentality everywhere.

Yes I am one of whom you have described. Years of work in EM under this environment turns me into a burnt out and soul drained person. There were even moments where I started questioning my "self worth" and my capability. I was gaslighted several times by my supervisors with comments that even till today I find it ridiculous.

This is one unique culture in EM.

Can you imagine a talented, loyal, and hardworking contributor realizing that all efforts can be put in jeopardy due to him not having political capital or a mentor that is protecting his career? Regardless, reorganization and layoffs will always occur and unfortunately those most negatively impacted are not justifiable pip or deadwood but, those without the network or corporate connections. If he can keep the head down and prosper for 15 more years without falling into unfair traps…Full respect!

I can totally relate to this. Sad, but very true.
