Thread regarding Cigna layoffs

Was Evernorth acquisition the key factor that put Cigna in its current situation?

TIA!

I worked on evernorth stuff for years and was still confused by what it was half the time, it really is just a shell, couldve easily just used a reworked mycigna as the shell and saved yourself millions

Watch the congressional hearing that happed last week. Search healthcare ceo congressional on YouTube. Youll learn more about what’s going on in our industry than you ever knew before. It’s mind blowing. The reason for these layoffs is bc Cigna decided to go with a transparent pricing model as of October 2025, Google it. The “ loss”to Cigna (they will make that money up with PMPM) will be 600M. The math matches. An excuse to layoff

@bq Agreed. The scrutiny of the PBM model, while ongoing for years, reached peak intensity under the Biden administration. But for some, it's just more fun to blame Trump for EVERYTHING.

@a2 you can’t blame marketing. Customers saw no value in the companies other than Express Scripts and Acreedo, which drives significant revenue and margin for Cigna. Also. Evernorth didn’t acquire Centene. That is a customer.

Cigna didn’t buy Centene. Cigna's Express Scripts secured a multi-year contract to manage Centene's pharmacy benefit management services, that started January 1, 2024.

Came to say this. Cigna bought a number of companies, threw them in a cardboard box and wrote in crayon the word ‘Evernorth’ on it.

Everyone in Evernorth has no idea what the point of Evernorth is, except as a container.

I think the real torpedo - aside from Trump - was buying Centene.

Anyways, I was just laid off. AMA.

Express Scripts part of buisness is net positive. Especially Accredo.

@a2 "Evernorth" was never understood because it's not understandable. If a company (Cigna) creates a new company (Evernorth) and then has to have meeting after meeting & town hall after town hall & email after email just to explain to it's employees what that new company is and does, it was a failure from the get-go. Evernorth was/is a shell game.

Cigna didn’t buy Evernorth. Cigna created Evernorth. Cigna bought Express scripts which is the only entity driving revenue. Imagine the red we would be in if that acquisition wasn’t made. However, the Evernorth brand team has really fumbled creating the story of how Express Scripts and Evernorth fall into the org. Such a mess!
