In Canada it is 2 to 3 months of pay plus two weeks Per year of job completed. With 8 years you will be paid approx 6 months of base salary.

@nc no one said they are "free'. If you read the post you'd understand the point was that RIFs take location cost as a major factor. Remote employees mitigate that part of the equation. And no one said anything about cross border. Remote employees are not immune to a layoff, that claim would be preposterous. But Remote employees are not targets of a RIF base solely on that classification. They are severely limited in career mobility which is a factor to being saved from a RIF.

The idea that remote, cross‑border employees “carry absolutely zero cost” is misleading and reductive. Every employee—remote or onsite—represents a real investment in payroll, benefits, infrastructure, and compliance. Remote staff may not occupy physical office space, but they still require technology, management oversight, and integration into workflows. To suggest they are “free” ignores both the tangible costs and the value they generate.

@h7 Being remote doesn’t automatically make a role safe from AI or automation. Companies are increasingly focusing on site consolidation as part of cost and efficiency strategies, but the real risk comes from whether the work itself can be automated or streamlined. Lower overhead or remote status doesn’t eliminate that risk, and remote employees often have less flexibility to move internally. Ultimately, it’s the role and its value, not location, that determine exposure.

@h1 Why would remote positions be at any greater risk? They carry absolutely zero cost to the organization for any site and rated in a different geography for payroll basis. While it may not fit the RTO scenario, they are the least expensive to maintain. Remote staff are stuck though. They can't post or do anything to move within the company. Remote work agenda is attrition based but they aren't targeted specifically in a RIF.

Most of the Ontario employees will be let go and many in UK. Jane wants a higher bonus! That's all. Who cares for honest citizens and their kids?!
US IT is safe as long as they are Indian managers and they employ same caste candidates.
Virtusa, TCS, Wipro, Infosys, LT Mindree, NTT data etc.. will thrive like gold. Their vendor contracts will be renewed and the citizens of the respective countries will loose their jobs!
Citi ethics and HR is well aware of the caste system in the company and they have no power! shame shame!
