Looking for advice on how best to ask for a higher severance amount. Has anyone recently been able to successfully negotiate higher.

How much severance did they offer you? One week per year?
Actually, there is room to negotiate but only if you have leverage. That piece of paper you sign to collect severance is an agreement not to sue. Do you have knowledge of illegal activity? Have you been discriminating again and have a paper trail of proof? We're you laid off right after submitting for maternity leave? Consult a lawyer IF you suspect you have a case and refuse to sign that paper. Otherwise, just sign and accept what they're willing to give you.
Since they don’t actually have to pay severance, I’d think you don’t have much room to negotiate.
