Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Work is supposed to be fun

Work is supposed to be fun, but companies have made it so difficult that many Gen X and Gen Z employees hate going to the office and feel like they’re just following marching orders. The ’90s and early 2000s felt more enjoyable because we had people from other cultures who assimilated and didn’t treat the U.S. as merely an economic zone. People weren’t constantly worried about their jobs being outsourced to developing countries.

Been here 25 years now. I'm not sure I would describe any part of it as "fun", but there were times in the pre Shart era where it was enjoyable and there was minimal fear mongering coming from the top with respect to outsourcing. So fun? Not really, but a he|| of a lot better back in the days than it has been in the last 5 years.

I think the increased focus on productivity and inventing numerous metrics has changed all workplaces in general. Managers used to be just dou--ebags, but now they’re just robots and number jockeys. I got a Christmas card with departmental stats. Nothing about well wishes or family etc. That tells me all I need to know about the direction of corporate culture.

almost every job I've been in - had some fun (enjoyable) parts, and some unpleasant parts. Overall, for a good job, I'd say the enjoyable parts need to outweigh the other. And I have had some of those over my lifetime.

OP is right. That was a period of growth. We were hiring stateside not outsourcing and no talk of layoffs. Most teams were in same location interacting with each other. We were friends at work not competing against each other. We felt valued and respected.
Good times

Yes, working in IT used to be exciting and engaging. This was when Americans were out-innovating the world. And long before Vivek told them they just did not have the brains for it.

Gen X would say it was never intended to be fun. It's called work. Maybe the word you're looking for is enjoyable? Or tolerable?

Work has rarely, if ever, been fun for the vast majority of people who have ever lived. If youve ever had fun at work on a consistent basis consider yourself blessed, but if you think its some kind of birthright youre horribly misinformed.
