I don't have enough work to stay busy as it is, but management has now instructed me to train a new hire to do my exact job. I'm the only one in this specific role on my team. Am I just being paranoid, or does this sound like I'm training my own replacement for an upcoming layoff?

Yes - whenever you use any company provided AI tools, you are training your replacement.
The plan is for AI to use your recorded knowledge base
Management is doing it wrong. You should be training an AI to do your job, not a person 🤖🤣
Is this person in another country? If so, yes!
It’s likely someone already knows how to do your job or can at least takeover at any point. Show them you care about your team and the company. Train and teach them what you know, I’ve had help from people who’ve been help me who been here 20+ years, it’s the only way we make it.
