I've been through several mergers and takeovers with NS, this is a takeover. In the past each RR had their culture and history, NS has gutted their company,Management sold out the proud history of the former Carriers with this sell out.
Hedge Fund boys are calling the shots at NS, CSX is going down the same road.
Lots of jobs will be lost.
Just saying!!!

I can see a lot of management cuts later in the year. HQ cuts are no secret, they already publicly announced a quarter of the employees will be cut, another quarter will be forced to relocate to Omaha (I could see at least half of those forced to move, quitting), and then unannounced they’ll probably basically force to quit/fire another quarter of employees. That’ll bring the old Atlanta HQ down to a fraction of what it used to be. As for this fancy new building, it will be sold. I’m no expert on the legal side of the HQ building but from the sounds of it, basically taxpayer funded a huge portion of the building both directly with grants+ super low interest loans and indirectly with tax breaks for GA job creation. There is some kind of option coming up later this year, where basically NS/UP can get out of most of the legal obligations to the building and just become a renter for a couple floors if they want. Personally, I never was a fan of all these tax payer incentives giving to NS under the illusion of job creation. It wasn’t good for America, you lost more jobs in Norfolk than were created in Atlanta, same thing is going to happen in Omaha. As for the field side, there will be a lot of new management on all levels. Big shake up is coming once the merger goes through. Merger really isn’t the best word, it’s more of a takeover by UP.

Maintenance facility reductions
UP currently has 28 locomotive and railcar maintenance facilities with 20 or more employees, employing a total of 3,295 workers; NS has 24 such facilities, employing 2,212 people. NS also has personnel at more than 15 other locations available for locomotive servicing or running repairs. In addition to identifying locomotive facilities at Decatur, Ft. Wayne, Inman, and Louisville for elimination or reduction, the application notes it anticipates consolidation of mechanical facilities around current interchange locations in Chicago, Kansas City, New Orleans, and St. Louis, saving $21 million in position reductions and $6.2 million in reduced overhead. An NS car backshop at Portsmouth, Ohio, will also be idled.

On the other hand, auto rack repairs will be brought in house at De Soto, Mo., requiring the addition of 19 new craft employees by the end of year 3.
