Don’t think that hard work, good reviews, or even being chummy with your manager will save you. You’re a number on a spreadsheet. If you make more than your coworkers, well, bye bye. If you don’t want to be caught with your pants down, you better accept this as reality.

I posted a few days ago, but your commentary is wrong and ads to the hysteria. Unless things drastically have changed, for decades mass layoffs at PEP were never driven by specific salaries. You could be a new L-6 making $65k or a tenured L-8 making $120k…it was never looked at. You got “credit” for eliminating a <L9 position and it counted as one tally mark worth $90k (or whatever, this is just an example). It’s cold, heartless, I’m not defending it. Just clarifying that your specific salary versus your peer set is one of the few things you don’t need to stress about.
If you don't want to be caught with your pants down, don't wear pants!
You work at a massive company. A 1% cut of people is 3190 people. Thank you for listening to my TED talk on large companies.
