Why would they want you back?

You can go to work for a consulting company that has a "consulting company" contract with ExxonMobil. ExxonMobil is not hiring you. They are hiring the consulting company.

Once an employee separates under pay in lieu, the employment relationship ends completely, and there is no eligibility to rejoin the company now or later.

The world is bigger than a company who do not value you as much so it's better to move on.

Never heard of that. Most likely never hear about it if it has happened. That would be embarrassing. Now I k ow of a guy who did the 2 week notice. Left for another job , took the job and then discovered he had messed up. Begged to come back and they made it happen. They pulled some serious strings and are playing it off that it ever happened.
