I am curious if one could go on leave of absence while they are in their severance period which ends on December 26. I just received a letter in the mail telling me that the employer is going to pay for this starting on January 1, 2026. If anybody has any insight on this, I would appreciate a response.

Your question is d-mb. If you are getting paid to do nothing, why would you need “time off” for a disability? You are already off work.
You can take as much time as you need
What would you go on leave from? It's not working if you're on severance.
No you cannot. What we refer to as "severance" is officially a "salary continuation leave." See the official SPD posted on Teamworks. So, you are already on a leave and no longer an active employee.
The details provided in your ask don’t make any sense. But I suspect your goal is to extend the time you receive income and benefits.
No, you cannot go on STD/LTD during severance. During severance you are no longer an employee and as such are not extended those benefits.
Apologies I meant short-term disability and long-term disability not leave of absence
