Nokia's Polish branch refuses to recognize a legal trade union. A pattern of union busting that betrays Finland's democratic labor values

" Zwiazkowa Nowoczesna is a legally registered trade union founded in 2024 at Nokia Solutions & Networks Poland. From the very beginning, Nokia's local management has employed tactics directly drawn from the classic union busting playbook: refusing to communicate, denying legal status, and obstructing any form of dialogue with employees. These are not isolated missteps—they form a pattern, suggesting intent rather than confusion.
Recently, Nokia Poland reiterated in an official letter that “your trade union does not exist for us,” despite receiving multiple formal notifications required by Polish law regarding our activity and membership. This position is blatantly illegal. According to Poland's Trade Union Act, employers must recognize and communicate with every duly formed trade union, regardless of size. There are no legal grounds for denying recognition of our existence, and doing so constitutes a violation of fundamental labor rights protected both by national and EU law.

This conduct reveals bad faith. It shows that Nokia is not merely misunderstanding Polish legal standards—it is consciously disregarding them. Such behavior would be unthinkable in Finland, a country where trade unions helped shape the very foundations of the modern welfare state and social economy. The contrast is striking: a Finnish company that thrives within a strong system of social dialogue now exports authoritarian labor practices to Central and Eastern Europe."

@OP " The Trade Union "Związkowa Alternatywa" (Alternative) is raising the alarm that Nokia Solutions and Networks has initiated a collective layoff process in Poland, in violation of labor law and the Trade Union Act. Employees are already receiving termination notices despite the employer failing to conduct the legally required consultations with the union.

"The Trade Union "Związkowa Alternatywa" (Alternative) at Nokia Solutions and Networks, operating since the end of 2023, was not informed of the planned layoffs, was not provided with any consultation documents, and was not given the opportunity to participate in the procedure. This action constitutes a blatant violation of Article 26, Sections 1 and 3 of the Trade Union Act, which require employers to cooperate with trade unions in matters concerning the collective interests of employees, including collective layoffs ," the union states.

It points out that this is yet another instance of the company breaking the law. The union is also fighting with Nokia for its official recognition, and the case has been referred to the prosecutor's office . "
