A "Maybe" story

While we all wait for our fate, I wanted to share a story to help keep things in a little perspective.

This Taoist and Zen Buddhism "Maybe" story illustrates the principle that it is impossible to judge whether an event is truly good or bad fortune because one never knows its future consequences.

The Story of a Farmer:

Once upon a time, there was an old farmer in a small village.

The horse runs away:
One day, the farmer's only horse ran away. The neighbors came to offer their sympathy for his "terrible bad luck." The farmer calmly replied, "Maybe".

The horse returns with wild horses:
The next day, the horse returned, bringing with it three (or seven) wild horses. The neighbors exclaimed, "What wonderful luck!" The farmer again said, "Maybe".

The son breaks his leg:
The following day, the farmer's son tried to ride and tame one of the wild horses, was thrown off, and broke his leg. The neighbors offered their condolences for this "misfortune." The farmer replied, "Maybe".

The son avoids conscription:
A week later, soldiers came to the village to conscript all able-bodied young men for the army. Seeing the farmer's son had a broken leg, they passed him by. The neighbors said, "What good luck that he was spared!" The farmer simply replied, "Maybe".

The Moral of the Story
The parable teaches that events in life unfold in complex, interconnected ways, and what seems like a setback may turn into a blessing, and vice versa. The moral is to embrace uncertainty, practice detachment and equanimity, and avoid rushing to label events as definitively "good" or "bad"

A few months ago, we didn't know this person named 'Dan', and a few years later, he wouldn't matter as much, regardless of the outcome on 11/20. This is a phase, and it will pass eventually.

That was a taste of optimism for life’s journey.

Taking this all in stride.. I just passed my manager in the hallway and I could feel this uneasy tension.. I suspect I am on the chopping block, not bitter about it.. and in a moment of uncontrolled Tourettes, I sang “Willlll you come seeeee me…. Thursdays and Saturdays.. hey… hey… hey hey.. He gave me a nervous smile and kept walking…

as will I Thursday into the unknown but determined..

Let's also add the context that most people will still be here next week. This is 15%, the messages on this board make it seem like 90% will be RIF'd.

A story of a soul inspired by the maybe story.

Once upon a time there was an office worker. Kinda inspired, somewhat loyal and a mind-my-own-business-do-you-mind person, this i’Soul.

Employer loses shirt:

One day the i’Soul’s employer could not find few pennies to report to SEC. US of A stopped minting penny, so the employer cried foul. The neighbors came to offer their sympathy for this penny-loss-mis-fortune. The i’Soul said will see.

Penny lost Dime borrowed:

Interest rate was low, employer got some spotty 5G after issuing bonds. Most neighbors were jealous but posted fake positivity on linkedin. The neighbor from far, was real. They came to say what wonderful luck, you will get bonus this year. i’Soul said will see.

Rate went up and crazy things happened:

Employer hired help and he murmured let’s reduce payroll. The yacht club owner neighbor of the big wig overheard and “leaked” to media that 15% will be cut. i’Soul’s mortgage burdened neighbors came to say what a terrible thing to happen, we hope your job is safe (toe fingers crossed). i’Soul said will see.

Forum readers said:

F* maybe, F VZ, F* this suspense, let there be Nov 20 now! i’Soul said my point exactly, you see.

I feel like I keep hearing this recently, in various contexts. Funny how it keeps popping up. A sign of the uncertain times we are in I suppose
