1-N Ranking

That's how it was done people... someone up your chain had to do this.

"Give me a ranking of your employees."

Be prepared, some groups are going away entirely and some groups could lose 50% of the team.

"You have 10 people? Make it work with 5." -- Dan

People, sadly, it doesn't matter if you're an excellent employee with great reviews and work ethic. Dan has relegated people to simply being a number. X number of X are getting whacked. I wish I could say this wasn't true, but it is.

If your organization is "top-heavy", stacking ranking won't apply.

@OP is mostly correct, with exception to the last paragraph. If you’re an excellent employee with great reviews you’re going to be near the top of the 1-N lists and be fine unless your whole team is impacted. So if you have Exceeding or Leading reviews in your recent past you can sleep a little bit better.

A bunch of years ago during a RIF, the entire team except me was let go. It su*cked for quite a while but I worked out an alternate schedule and ran it for 2 years like that.
Then moved on to a different team with actual teammates.

As of 1st Q 2025, the last one I was involved with, it is stack ranking by band within the impacted team done by leadership, not always direct managers. Exception is if the entire organization is being RIFd.

That’s how I would do it if I was a new CEO who wanted to put my thumbprint on the company and mark my territory. I can’t fault Dan if he thinks “speed is of the essence”.

I’d have my subordinates stack rank theirs and purge away. Where we sc--w up and need expertise, we go back and hire back those employees RIF’d as consultants where we can during 1Q. And then where we still have fat we RIF again a little more surgically and covertly through 2026.

And I say this as someone who might possibly have a 15 minute call meeting invite placed on my calendar come Thursday.
