Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

I'm glad we got the extra time

I might be in the minority here, but I'm glad we were given some time before everything hits, even if the waiting is stressful and everyone’s nerves are shot. Getting blindsided with layoffs out of nowhere would have crushed me, and having at least some warning let me pull myself together, update my resume, check in with a few contacts, and take a hard look at my finances. It is not a huge amount of preparation, but it’s enough to give me a sense of control so that if I do get laid off, I will not feel like the floor just disappeared under my feet. A surprise layoff would have felt ten times worse, at least in my view.

True. It makes a holiday layoff feel good.

@a9 I think a recession is coming with all these layoffs. Anyone in their 50's knows what it's like to live in a recession (for a decade) and have some saving for rainy years like what we are about to see. But I feel sorry for those in their 20's, 30's, and 40's. I think most have always had a job or were able to find another job easily if they were laid off before, but this time, it's going to be really tough. With geopolitics, tariffs, AI, etc. this is going to be a very different experience people will feel compared to the past. Sure, before we had geopolitical issues, and even tariffs, and computers, but computers didn't take away jobs at such a rapid pace as AI is taking over. And with computers, you still needed humans (like to write programs, or do testing, etc.) but with AI, it is totally replacing the human in jobs as high up as doctors (radiologists, etc.), lawyers, mathematicians, physicist, chemist, pharmacists, engineers, etc. AI is taking over high to middle class jobs (as well as many routine jobs). This is a big problem. We are going to continuously hear about layoff after layoff after layoff going forward.

Coming from my previous company, also is famous for homes for the holidays routine, I was caught off guard. Rumors started to swirl about changes and it impacted me on a Thur and it would happen on Monday. I started to put the pieces together and it was inevitable. I spent all weekend worrying about it. I was a horrible feeling. However, I was blindsided and did not have time to plan, but 3 days does have its advantages as we don’t have to go a month with rumors about this. Either way it is terrible

Let's thank the person(s) who leaked the news to the media. Now, at least, anyone who may be affected won't be shocked by the news.
