Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Would you come back as a contractor?

Several of my peers who left Vz as part of the 2024 HCL deal have recently been hired back as contractors. Would you consider a contractor position if offered?

@a8 pretty much you need to know a hiring manager who is looking for a contractor.

VZ moved me to HCL Nov 2023 and HCL laid us all off Nov 2024. I had to wait a full 6 months post HCL layoff (During time I collected unemployment and spent most of my VZ/HCL severance - 35 weeks pay). I have been working as a VZ Contractor (Project Manager) since May 1, 2025. I am 61 and just hope to make it until the summer when I can retire and start social security. VZ will likely keep hiring contractors moving forward. Much lower pay with no benefits.

Puts food on the table, sure why not. You cannot come back until 6 months off of payroll to be a contractor.

I did it. Made good money. Enough to pay the bills, including medical, until I was ready to retire.

Are contractors safer than full time employees when it comes to RIF?

If I was unemployed at the time, might consider it. But then again…do I want to work for a company that didn’t value me enough to retain me?
